TW: abuse (physical/verbal/emotional)
(Authors note: this is me imagining Dean as a trans man, if you don’t like that, don’t read it.)
Dean was five or six before he realized he was different. John eventually stopped trying to put dresses on him because the screams Dean let out would wake up Sammy. John had dropped the ‘na’ off of the end of Dean’s name around the same time he began to tell Dean to man up.
Grabbing Dean’s arm he would growl, “You want to be a real man, you’ll do this.”
But Dean was just a boy, maybe seven. With Mom gone, and Dean moving schools every six months, John was the only person Dean had to learn from. He believed he had to work twice as hard and be twice as “masculine” to be seen as a man.
When Sammy said his first word, John was on a hunt.
“Bean!” Sammy said, stumbling towards Deans legs. Dean had been waiting for the water on the stove to boil. The stove was too tall for Dean so he had to listen for the water boiling.
“What did you say?” he asked Sammy as he picked him up.
But of course, Sam didn’t understand him.
“I promise” Dean said, looking at his little brother, “that you will never have to go through what I did.”
And of course, Dean delivered on his promise. He always took the brunt of the hits from John and diverted the verbal abuse towards himself.
