Vicky Thompson, a transgender woman, was found unresponsive and pronounced dead late Friday night after being sent to an all-male prison.
A transgender prisoner, Vicky Thompson, identified herself as female since her mid-teens. She was found dead at Armley Prison, a category-B prison in Leeds, West Yorkshire on Friday 13 November.
Friends and family have expressed their dismay at the events. They suggest Ms Thompson pleaded to be sent to an all-female prison. They also claim that she would take her own life is she was sent to an all male prison.
After being sentenced for 12 months in August, she later was sentenced to 24 months for breaching the terms of her sentenced. As a result, she was later remanded in custody at Bradford Crown Court.
Her lawyer Mohammad Hussain, described Ms Thompson, who had not undergone transgender reassignment surgery, as a vulnerable transgender woman. Mr Hussain asked the judge to send Ms Thompson to an all-female prison because she was “essentially a woman.” According to Ministry of Justice guidelines, prisoners must be placed in locations according to their gender. This usually refers to the gender on their birth certificate. However, if they are to receive a gender recognition certificate, a new birth certificate will be issued to the prisoner.
There has been outcry on social media from the transgender community as well as from supports. Especially as #Transgenderweek is upon us. MPs have also joined those angered by Ms Thompson’s death. Among those are Labour MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood and the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, Cat Smith. Ms Smith has since asked for an audience in the Commons for the treatment of trans prisoners.
The UK may appear to be the one of the best and safest places to be a transgender person. However, there still is a long way to go if there is to be true equality here in Britain.
