DC’s Union Station is often hailed as a model for how other cities should reinvigorate their historic downtown transit hubs. Although, the reality is more complex. The beauty of the station is now relegated to what is essentially a luxury mall. Customers to Amtrak’s second busiest station meanwhile are held in a humdrum 1980s addition largely hidden at the back of the complex.
