Translate + Transform Final Outcome

Here is a poster I made of Turki's fingerprints using the bubble font. I have selected the outline of the font and places the finger prints on top, then selecting inverse to delete the outside to make the prints catch the shape of the font. It's been a fun process of using ink as a way to gain information and analysing the lines of each finger prints that are all unique. From research gathered I have discovered that there has never been found two people to share the same finger prints which is why it's a form of identification when the police finds a body who can't be identified or a crime has been committed and finger prints are found on the scene. As humans we leave finger prints of anything we touch, even clothes and I find it fascinating that we have created a database where finger prints can identify a person.

For my poster I wanted to create the whole alphabet, but I ran out of time since we only had one week to complete this. I struggled finding my topic at the beginning and going forward from my initial idea of spiral line art. However, combining identity with type has been very interesting because it forms a special communication between the fact that type also holds personality. Which is why I wanted to embed the two together. I think more research into identity could have been useful to help me achieve more experiments and a deeper understanding of different systems we have to identify one another.

Experimenting with Finger Prints

The finger prints above are mine and the bellow is my manager Turki's. I chose a double font because it has thick strokes and gives more space to present the finger prints in detailed compared to a font with this strokes. This is to compare side by side the differences within using the same font but with different people's finger prints. Expressing the identity of the person through type and making it personal to them. My finger prints are more oval than Turki's where as his are more round which is interesting. Some lines make look heavier in weight because of excess ink, but I enjoy it because it adds character and weight to the letters, especially seen in the 'C' and 'A'.

Initial Idea

for my initial idea I thought I could create a spiral line piece of art as exampled bellow but with finger prints instead. The process of altering finger prints to create an image within the lines. The example I have taken from a website where you can upload any image and it creates a spiral line art of the image.

FMP - Translating & Transformi

I think from my initial ideas I have been very interested in the concept of identity and what it means in different concepts. We talk about identity within branding where we analyse different elements within our design that are unique and create an identity within a brand. I enjoy the concept of typeface identity and how fonts become faces for brands because of unique characteristics. This idea of identity sparked from looking at my finger prints which is also a form of identifying a person, but its called biometrical identification.

Identity

Identity is the distinguishing character or personality of an individual.

I looked at different ways identity can be investigated:

finger prints

saliva

eyes

I think I looked at this very literally, but I enjoyed the idea of embedding finger prints into typeface using the same font but analysing how it is still unique by using different people's finger prints.

FMP - Translate + Transform

Following the briefing and examples showed. I have decided to write down all my initial ideas that I have came up with. In therms of creating a system I am not sure how to but I hope through experimentation and research I can figure it out.

My initial ideas:

Translating identity through finger prints and how each one of us has unique finger prints. How could I visually transform this?

Typography can express emotions, translating type into emotions.

Translating sign language into images.

I very much love Latina music and the form of dance salsa. I would love to play on how a salsa song can be visually translated into movement. The concept of how we come up with dance moves based on the music and the rhythm.

Translating stars into images, exploring constelations but through illustrations creating images.

Visualising something that doesn't have strict visuals associated to it is difficult so I have decided to expand my research and look at more visualisation projects that aren't directly related to music. This animation is a visualisation of a daydream. This animation pared with the music feels surreal and immersive. I really feel like I am seeing this persons daydream. This project took the approach of explicitly visualising what they see which makes the project more personal and subjective to the artist. With my project I want to leave it up to interpretation, I want to visualise emotions without it being too explicit.

Colours

For the colours I again devised a system. I associated different colours with emotions to help emphasise my emotions felt when listening to the soundtrack. I used gradients so I could blend the colours in a seamless way. When deciding on my colours I also thought about linking them to Jaws, for example I used a blue background and added the red on top. I think this really helped visualise the narrative of the soundtrack.

Blue: Safety/Calm

Red: Fear

Yellow: Suspense

Green: Apprehension

Black: Uncertainty
