Questions to ask at interview
transposner answered your question “I’ve been seeing a spat of job seeking posts, and several of my own...”
interviews are a complete mystery to me, like i always hear "ask questions at the end" but like. what questions are the sort of thing to ask?
There are generally two types of questions good to ask at interview. Ones that are business orientated, and ones that are personal.
Business:
‘Do you have any questions’ is code for ‘Show off your research about our company’. I know, it’s a rubbish code. But it means you should start sentences with ‘So I saw that...’
So, for example, they wrote on their website that they’ve grown loads in the last X years. Ask what their growth plans are for the next X years. (This will actually also affect you! If there are currently 15 people and they plan to hire 15 more in the next year, the company that you join will be a very different dynamic to the one it will be in a year!)
If they wrote on their website that they’re really proud of their company culture, ask what the culture is like.
If the interviewer mentions that they’re hiring for the X team, ask what the X team is like, and ask them what kind of person they’re looking for to fit into that team.
Personal:
An interview isn’t just a person seeing if they want to hire you. It’s about you working out if you want to work for them. Some ridiculous stat like 63%* of not hiring someone at an interview isn’t about their skill, it’s about their fit.
So it’s things like ‘Will they get on with the people on the team’, ‘What does it look like they do best’ and ‘How will they affect the team dynamic’. Sometimes they advertise for one position and then find someone they want to join who has different skills so they’ll shuffle everyone around a bit to make room for them. And these are things that you want to know too.
You will want to know what an average day in this job will involve. You will want to know what the team you’re working with is like. You will want to know what the induction, training and on-going support/training is like. You will want to know where they see this role going and if there will be additional responsibilities if you prove yourself.
You want to know if there is internal progression (ie. if you can expect a review and promotion every year). You want to know if there is a big turnover (ie. if lots of people leave very soon after starting). You want to know if lots of the management were promoted from within as opposed to hired in (ie. they try to promote longstanding employees).
*do not quote me on this stat, I wrote this on the train home on my phone and I have no sources
Don’t ask about:
Benefits, holiday allowance, perks. At least, not in the first interview. You want the company to think that you want the job for the job, not because they’re the place offering the best ‘extras’. You can bring it up as part of the negotiation later.

Killian, shakespeare, and the inexplicable urge to yell various actors names while shaking your fist dramatically bc they did something mildly frustrating
