Elizabeth is "gifted" to Victor at a very young age, "... looked upon Elizabeth as mine". Elizabeth has no say in whether she marries Victor or not and it's very possible that she acts as if marrying Victor is her greatest wish to please and respect Caroline's (Victor's mother / Elizabeth's adoptive mother). Let's remember that Caroline saved Eliza from poverty and most likely a much earlier death, she then saved Eliza from scarlet fever then, during this process, Caroline contracted the disease and died herself. It's in Elizabeth that she feels extremely guilty for Caroline's death, possibly making Elizabeth force herself into "romantically" loving Victor. Secondly, Mary Shelley's background was unlike many women's in her era. Both of her parents were writers and radical thinkers, with her mother being credited as the first feminist. This doesn't mean that Shelley was throwing pride flags at everyone she met but it does explain why the relationships in the novel are so open ended and up for consideration. For example; Victor bases who he likes and dislikes on appearance - take M. Waldman and M. Krempe for example - Victor takes an immediate disliking to Krempe who is described at squat but M. Waldman is described by Victor as having a sweet voice and he also mentions how he likes his hair. These characters aren't much different but Victor only likes those he is attracted to. [cough cough he's most likely bi] Last but not least, from memory there is absolutely no evidence to support Justine being straight so can you stop w the heteronormativity.
