Context: my wife and I have a tradition of watching every lesbian Christmas movie we can each year, so representation is on my mind.
I am curious if you have a favorite queer (explicitly) musical and/or character? (Feel free to also give queer (explicitly) as well if you would like)
Now that's an excellent tradition! I'm curious - what's your record number of movies you watched?
Thank you for the ask - and I'm glad you didn't ask about my favourite lesbian character in a musical because I find lesbian representation in musicals a bit lacking.
My favourite explicitly queer character is May in &Juliet, implied to be non-binary. May's arc of self-discovery and finding love is my favourite in the show (even though I dearly love Lance and Angelique too!), and it's so cool that they defy labels. The characters agree that labels don't matter.
Honourable mentions: Jamie in gender-bent Company. Darling. He's so so scared. (Speaking of Company, they should have kept the girlfriends in the gender-bent version. Or at least one of them. Let Bobbie have girlfriends. Duh.) And Daphne in the new (sorta) Some Like It Hot musical.
Favourite queer musical in general, hmm. I like some - Falsettos, Fun Home, It Shoulda Been You, Lizzie; and many I haven't seen - Bare, A Strange Loop, La Cage aux Folles, Why Am I So Single; others with queer characters aren't really queer shows overall - Cabaret, A Chorus Line, Come From Away. I haven't been able to connect with Rent and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, unfortunately. So no, I don't think I have a favourite musical that is actually a queer musical and not just a musical with a handful of queer characters...
