Le Trash Bar, cruising bar de référence à Marseille pour les mâles du Sud !
Williamsburg’s Beloved Trash Bar is Becoming Something Unexpected via Observer
On this day in 2009, my ska/punk band @heystrangernyc played it’s first gig ever at Trash Bar in Brooklyn. I loved what we did but we couldn’t overcome that it was the wrong time and place in so many ways.
#26: Topanga (returns)
Who: That same 90s cover band from March Where: Trash Bar When: 5/29/2015 Why: If you don't see your friends play, you're a jerk Yes, I saw them last time, Yes, they're playing at the same venue. Yes, three of the four members are some of my closest friends. Yes, they only play 90s covers, and yes, they have a very loose definition of "90's". And yes, I enjoyed myself tremendously. The Boy Meets World-inspired cover band was everything a good cover band should be - engaging, fun (and funny), and tight. If you're just going to do covers, you better do them right, and they did. It's tough for me to judge a cover show, but I can respect the musicianship. It's too bad the bassist is leaving the band and this might be their final show, but on the upside, maybe he'll form his own band with yours truly and I'll finally get to play out - you never know.
hi!
#5: Topanga
Who: A 90's cover band that my friends starterd Where: The Trash Bar When: 3/24/2015 Why: A friend's band was playing I was in danger of letting another month go by between concerts, but I was saved by 90's cover band Topanga. A four piece rock group (three of whom are close friends), they performed at The Trash Bar in Brooklyn. Given that it was their first gig, I would say they exceed expectations - while people at the bar were disappointed it was a cover band, the disappointment was more "you guys are good, I wish you had your own songs", which the band jokingly acknowledged were "coming soon". While I'm not sure how true that is (no one will tell me), if they do I'll be excited to hear them - all of the members are talented, so I'm excited to see what comes next. The real question of tonight is if I add a song to my playlist whenever I see a cover band....
