“Do you… Do you think someone with no quirk can become a hero like you?”
Yoichi looked down at the young man he just saved, still covered in slime, older traces of soot clinging to his skin. He sighed before locating a bench, sitting on it and silently asking the young teen to sit beside him.
“Let me tell you an old story,” he started once the teen was seated, “it was back in a time where most of the population had no quirk, when having a quirk was a sign of otherness. The few who had no visible power hid them, the unlucky ones who couldn’t hide ran away.”
He hid a cough in his handkerchief.
“At first it was believed to be a mutation, an exception that only appeared in adults due to environmental influences. Theories exploded about the possible reasons. Something in the water, something in the air, aliens species coming to invade, climate change, various countries kept pointing fingers at each other, blamingthe other. Someone must have been at fault, they just needed to find whom.”
A sigh.
“But then, these mutations started to appear in younger individuals, teenagers, children with otherworldly powers, a baby able to glow.”
Izuku’s eyes widened.
“Which is when things started to change for the worst. When they realised it wasn’t going to stop, that there was no going back. Just like any minorities, people with quirks started fighting for rights. Those without were afraid and retaliated brutally. Some people used the chaos to rise to power, destabilising the whole country. No one was listening to anyone, every conflict escalated for the worse, this was also when the first notion of ‘villain’ as we know it today arose. Life felt bleak. There were no heroes.” He smiled wryly.
“But do you know what happened then?”
Izuku silently shook his head, enthralled by the tale.
“At a time where Japan was at his darkest, where neighbours fought for the basest of reasons, where families were torn apart, a man rose.”
“He fought to be heard, and once he started being listened to, he fought for others’ voices to be heard. He had no power to his name, no family that we know of, no real claim to this fight. He could have stayed home and choose not to get involved, no one would have hold it against him, no one would have ever known.”
“But he didn’t.” Izuku said.
Yoichi’s smile was small but sincere. “No, he didn’t. His name was Toshinori Yagi, most history books wouldn’t mention him, but at the time he was considered one of the first heroes. Not because he fought villains, not because he had a strong power, but simply because he listened, he heard, and he answered. He gave to the people what they needed at the time, not a big heroic fight, not a battle that will be told through the ages, but something more important. He brought them the first stones to build Peace, and the world wouldn’t be what it is today if it weren’t for him.”
“So tell me, Midoriya Izuku-“ the number one hero’s stare seemed to pierced right through him, but he was still smiling, “-do you think you could be a hero?”
