There is a witch that feels at her safest when she is hurt.

The pain cannot just come from anywhere. It must come from trusted hands. It must come from a place of understanding.

There is a doll that helps her feel safe. Its hands are lovingly cruel when necessary, and soft and caring when not.

They are both familiar with the phrase ‘traumatic reenactment’. Neither care that much for it, even if it fits. The doll knows happened to the witch that made her require violence to feel fully cared for. The witch doesn’t like talking about the previous hands that loved her and beat her at the same time. But the doll knows who hurt her and how. Where the doll was changed by invective and violation, its witch was changed by swift hands and uncaring ears.

The doll doesn’t understand why its witch doesn’t hate the them. The witch doesn’t understand why her doll doesn’t hate the hands that marred its soul either.

They both say it’s different.

But they both know that isn’t true, not really.
