Day 1 in Russia. I came across this beautiful archway while strolling down Tverskaya Street, on my way to the Red Square. Unfortunately, tourists weren’t allowed to enter today and so I’ll have to have a proper look around tomorrow. The city is mad with football frenzy. The squares are crowded with people from all over the world with the FIFA Fan-ID’s hanging from their necks. What a city, though. Kathputli - string marionettes, that have been an essential part of the indigenous culture of many regions in Pakistan, particularly in Punjab and Sindh. These puppet shows consisted of traveling companies that set up and performed at festivals and melas, enjoyed by grownups and children alike. These shows showcased stories from folk lore, legends of heroes and lovers. Sadly, however, this kind of puppetry is slowly dying out, especially with the advent of other forms of entertainment. There are only a select few people who are keeping this tradition alive today. This photo was taken at the Lok Virsa Heritage Museum; I visited after years. The famous Urdu poet, Sahir Ludhianwi, upon beholding the Taj Mahal, wrote these verses: اک شہنشاہ نے دولت کا سہارہ لے کر ہم غریبوں کی محبت کا اڑایا ہے مذاق Translation: A king of kings aided by his wealth has made a mockery of the love of us, the poor In Pakistan weddings can be an excessive, gaudy, gold-trimmed, affair; an exhibition of wealth and pomp, with bells and whistles and flowers imported from Holland, and giant ‘chandeliers hanging from faux velvet ceilings,’ and shiny Land Cruisers rented especially for the occasion, and ornate stages, and brides bedecked in jewelry. Each family must out do the other; there is immense pressure on parents whose children are getting married. People drown themselves in debt in order to keep up with the Joneses.
