In the cold winters of Rajasthan, India.
- I have a vivid memory of the first ever Kathputali show I watched in Rajasthan. It was near the Amber fort in Jaipur. I sat there hugging my mom under the blanket as we watched the puppets dance to the Marwari folk songs. I was only 10 at that time but the language and the cadence was familiar as I was raised in a marwadi speaking Rajasthani household in a small cozy town of Maharashtra.
Suffice it to say, kathputali or any form of puppet dance especially the ones from Rajasthan are so freaking cool.
I will never forget that experience. I wish I had a picture of it.
If you ever go to Rajasthan, don’t forget to go for a local kathputali show. They need the patronage and you’ll be left enchanted by the tittering noises and the beautiful folk songs and the puppets shaking their hips to their rhythms. It’s a spectacle!
