Travis meets Kurai in the rain and he also departs from him during rain. The irony of it never leaves Travis and rain carries a different message once he's blockaded from ever returning through the Gate he came through as Kurai destroys it.

At one point in the story, far along, Travis goes through one of the few gates that connect our world to Kurai's.  Strangely enough, there's one in New Orleans, which Kurai assumes to be a country lol.  He leaves on his vacation to instead slip away to help Kurai find his way north to Niacuiaro (his home country). Things were carefully planned as to not alert Travis's family, friends, coworkers, and interns.  Kurai fears Vladimir has stepped foot in Niacuiaro under Galek's command (Vladimir's general after Kurai looses status.)  Barioth was a Vladimirian soldier when Kurai was general, but some things happened and he ended up going AWOL, traveled for a bit, became well acquainted with many of the routes, cities, and towns, and ended up being a paid guide for the northern parts of Vladimir.  They meet  with Barioth and begin the trek north. Travis isn't used to long distance walks through freezing weather or carrying the luggage that they need to survive. This is unusual to Barioth as he was conditioned to travel in such weather with heavy gear and has a very high tolerance to the cold.  There are a lot of conversations, questions, and confuses faces about both worlds during this time.
