Neverender SSTB Show Review
Concept-driven progressive rock band Coheed and Cambria hit the nail on the head with their appropriately coined term, "Neverender.” In the tradition to their four-night concert series in 2008, the band's recent tour has celebrated their 10th anniversary by playing their debut album Second Stage Turbine Blade in its entirety. The "Neverender SSTB" tour has been a gift to the hardcore fan base the band has developed over the years, which features only Coheed and Cambria in one intimate evening that doesn't pull any punches. After a six-song acoustic set list, including a new track titled "Iron Fist" and the song "Who Watches the Watchmen?" from front-man Claudio Sanchez's side project The Prize Fighter Inferno, Coheed & Cambria launches into the popular album that began their journey overall. Coheed & Cambria is known for their storyline, "The Amory Wars,” (punctuation always before quotations) a sci-fi adventure that takes place in an array of planets known as Heaven's Fence, who are better known as their namesake symbol, "The Keywork.” The compilation of their music has been the haunting and heartbreaking tale of Coheed and Cambria's son, who must overcome the evil Wilhelm Ryan and his army that rules over Heaven's Fence.
The concert was an almost cinematic experience as the tracks were played in their original order, capturing the story fans have come to know through albums, comic books and prose adaptations. After the 10 songs from SSTB and the hidden track "Iro-Bot,” the band returned for another five-song encore. To cap off the evening, Claudio Sanchez and Travis Steever returned for one more acoustic jam where they played the rare b-side track, "Elf Tower New Mexico.” Sanchez claimed the song was a gift to the fans for sticking around and supporting their work over the last decade.
Neverender: Second Stage Turbine Blade is certainly an experience fans will not want to miss. The performance and setlist left nothing missing in one of the most unique shows concert-goers will ever experience. Coheed & Cambria plans one last encore show on the current tour in New York this June 11 that will be completely free as one last thank you to their die-hard group of fans.
