JUSTICE FOR #trayfordpellerin Louisiana State Police identified the man murdered as 31-year-old Trayford Pellerin and said he was carrying a knife when police first tasered him and later shot and killed him. Rickasha Montgomery, a witness who filmed a video of the police shooting of the suspect, said she saw what appeared to be a knife in the man's hand. She said officers tased him, but he kept walking down Evangeline Thruway away from police. She saw about six officers with guns pulled out, she said. Officers yelled for the man to get on the ground, the 18-year-old Montgomery said. But when the man reached the door of the Shell gas station, officers shot him.  Flowers outside convenience store on Evangeline Thruway as a memorial to man shot and killed by Lafayette Police. Saturday, Aug. 22, "When I heard the gunshots, I couldn't hold my phone like I was first filming," the Lafayette woman said. "I feel kind of scared about it. I'm traumatized. TONIGHT'S CLOSING THOUGHTS: Well, today there was another peaceful protest in Baton Rouge. Folks came together for Trayford Pellerin who was shot and killed in Lafayette, LA. I wore my shirt in remembrance of Victor White III, a 22-year-old young father who was killed in police custody in 2015 in New Iberia. I call it the #HoudiniSuicide because he supposedly shot himself in the stomach while in the back of a police car with his hands cuffed behind his back. Yeah... Houdini... I'm tired. I'm tired of crying. I'm tired of folks being offended when we say black lives matter too while they simultaneously pretend racism doesn't exist. Some are so blinded by pleas for black lives to matter that they can't even see that the same unruly police force that's killing blacks is also killing whites - its killing blacks in larger numbers but acts of racial violence are never isolated to a target group. When you give people a social license to ignore due process of law, it impacts everyone. So... I pray. I pray that the violent history of this nation that I read in books as a young person do not become a consistent part of our present. I pray that the hate that is being summoned by some in this nation does not experience a full rebirth. Human beings have a capacity to commit the most egregious sins against each other, but we also have the capacity to love. I pray, somehow, we find love. Don’t tell me they aren’t racist. He didn’t use an image of white men with guns because he doesn’t fear armed white men. He fears Black people. Higgins in a former cop now congressman, and the whole country should be discussing his threats. His comments make him a threat to the safety of the citizens of this state who legally carry a firearm.
