My roommate and I are completely opposite. Grant is a math and science kind of guy… I’m not. I’m really into politics… he’s not. Rooming with Grant has really allowed me to branch out of my comfort zone in a lot of ways. I learn new things everyday, from how to rappel down a mountain to learning about fixies (which for you non-bikers like myself, would be fixed-gear bikes). I think a lot of people are afraid of rooming with someone who isn’t blatantly like them, but I am sure neither one of us would have it any other way.
Honestly, I was worried about the whole “roommate thing” in college. A million questions raced through my head as I tried to contemplate what it would be like to have a roomie. What if we don’t get along? Is it weird if I want us to be best friends? Am I going to be able to live with a complete stranger? While the idea of a roommate can be nerve racking, it’s actually really fun to have someone to share your college experiences with. Grant’s calm demeanor makes for the perfect listener at night when I am freaking out about my homework and everything else in the world. And you have to love the impromptu dance competitions or movie nights. Also, that one time I found my roommate doing his homework in a hammock outside… priceless. But, it’s the small things that make for a great roommate. My favorite is sharing different types of music artists we like. We both like a wide spectrum of music and it is always great to hear something new, no matter how obscure.
Of course there are a ton of things Grant and I have in common too. That’s part of the reason we chose to room together. But, it’s really our differences that really add value to our friendship. I guess you can say he’s a cool guy.
Lastly, I want to say congratulations to my roommate.
Grant: “I signed with Google today”
Tre': “Oh really. I went on a bike ride today…”
What kind of pillow talk do you have with your roommate? Congratulations Grant Oakley! I’m so proud of you.
