I got a question about treason-verse and seeing as it more world-buildy than fic inspiring I thought I’d write the long answer here.

Q: I wonder if they ever found out about snow know? Like did snow know the whole time or did he figure it out after the 74th games?

Short answer: Effie clocks that the Reaping was rigged the second she sees Peeta’s name, so she’s aware that Snow knows and when she tells Haymitch she says as much. From their perspective it doesn’t really matter when Snow knew, only that there wasn’t any point keeping it secret.

Now, to answer the question of when Snow knew (i.e., the long answer), Snow has known at least part of the equation since the 70th Games. Why the 70th? Because that’s the first year that Peeta is in the Reaping.

Seeing as the districts don’t have photo IDs they would need to verify identity, which could be done with a pinprick blood draw. Probably just a blood typing rather than full on markers. But also to avoid a very specific type of cheating they would check their familial match to the district’s living Victors, because given that Victors’ children are almost guaranteed to be reaped you know that at least one Victor has paid someone to take their kids place. As awful as it would be to condemn some other kid to the Hunger Games, if someone was desperate enough they could probably live with it if it meant their kid was safe.

So Snow had known for 4 years that Peeta was Haymitch’s son. But he was saving it for when it would be the most devastating … for the Quarter Quell. Because having the only living Quell Victor have to mentor his son 25 years after his own victory would make for excellent television and a particularly petty kinda torture for Snow’s least favourite Victor .

But then Effie gave away her own ties. Every year since the 70th Games, right before she read the boy’s name she would look for Peeta in the crowd. After two decades in the role the Reaping is basically running like clockwork so people notice when Twelve’s Reaping starts taking longer than they should.

In the end Peeta was reaped as a loyalty test for Effie - one that she inevitably failed. By fighting for Peeta she demonstrated that she was not willing to sacrifice her loved ones for the greater good of Panem and likely would have been killed if she wasn’t such obvious leverage against both Haymitch and Peeta. Snow hasn’t had anything good on Haymitch for decades so you know he’s gonna take that once he has it.

With Snow already in the know it’s basically an open secret after that. I think Effie would have told Great Aunt Messalina, but maybe not Prosie in an effort to protect her sister.
