Captain Falcon Off Stage Game and Edge Guarding Game
This applies to Smash 4, so if you’re here for Melee stuff, you shouldn’t read this.
Overview
Falcon is one of the heaviest characters in the game, but is the 2nd fastest character in the game. (1st is Sonic) However Falcon’s recovery options are just as bad as the decisions that Bush made when he was in the White House. Lol jk Cloud’s recovery is worse. His recovery can get gimped very easily however, so playing against characters with a really good off stage game is difficult (Sheik, Pika)
It’s a good idea to keep your double jump off stage, because you’ll be forced to use Up-B if you don’t have it.
Movement Offstage
Falcon, surprisingly, has a lot of horizontal speed in the air after using his Up-B. Recovering onto the stage isn’t a good option because of the lag it has, which can lead to a punish if the opponent has a long ranged attack or near you. However, if your opponent is far from you, or is a close ranged character, doing a reverse Up-B onto the stage can be an option. (Using the Up-B and reversing it so you go around the edge without grabbing it and landing on stage) Also, Falcon can sway back and forth really easily in air, so you can make a opponent think your going to land on the stage but pull back real quick to land on the ledge. (Be careful when doing this because if you pull back to far, you’ll miss the edge when falling)
Edge Guarding
Falcon’s edge guarding options are his B-air,D-tilt, D-air, U-tilt, F-air? and I’m still testing stuff with U-air.
*Always check to make sure if your opponent is grabbing the edge twice, the 2nd time you grab it you don’t get invincibility so you can punish with a run off b-air or spike them.
Falcons B-air is a really good kill move especially if the opponent is near the blast zone, and it has almost no landing lag.
Falcon’s D-air is another really good move but has a bit of cooldown. It has a spike property that’s super good.
U-tilt has a spike property as well, so it's good to punish opponents if they sway away from the ledge or have recoveries that put them above the ledge or don’t snap immediately (Mewtwo, Kirby, Shulk, Ike) Good option against horizontal recoveries as well. (Can try to hit the 2 framer)
D-tilt is good because Falcons legs go over the edge, usually good for Horizontal recoveries like Fox and Falco’s Side-B.
The Knee of Justice should only really be used if you know you can hit it, or if you want to be really swag. His f-air has a lot of cool down after and you can get punished if you miss it. Run off F-air is a good option towards characters like Ness or Lucas if near the edge.
As of recently I’ve been testing the waters with using U-air as a edgeguarding tool. The back/end of his U-air actually pushes opponents back, its not a strong tool but it really works well if the opponent has a weak recovery, or they have used their double jump already. (or other recovery options Ex. Ryu already used double jump and side-b, so you u-air him away from edge, his up-b won’t reach then)
