Plant of the Day
Saturday 4 July 2026
This Capsicum pubescens (apple chilli, tree chilli) requires frost free conditions in which it will grow to a shrub up to 2m high. It can produce abundant crops of rounded, hot, chilli peppers. The plant needs a long growing period and plenty of heat to mature but they will tolerate lower temperatures which means they will over-winter. One source mentioned that they could “continue fruiting for up to fifteen years” and they had “tree chillies… fruiting on Christmas Day”.
