Happy new year!
I had to send an email to somebody explaining what Squishface has going on this year, so here’s that info for you too!
Jan 20 is our sixth birthday, and we're also doing our yearly Squishface Coaster Show on the day. The Coaster Show is our dressed-down version of the Linden Postcard Show -- a free event where kids and adults gather round our drawing tables and make art on cardboard drink coasters, which all go up on the wall as a huge, colourful grid! In February one of our resident artists, Sam Emery, is launching his new small press Riso printery/retail space, Tree Paper Comics, which is setting up now at Harbour Town in Docklands as part of a Renew Australia project (you will also find the new Australian Cartoon Museum there, as well as Dodgy Paper, Trash Puppets and some of our friends at Blender Studios). Our award-winning free anthology, Squishzine Brunstown, was supported by Moreland Council in 2014, and we crowdfunded two further issues, Squishzine Brunstown #2 and #3, which are being set for printing now by Jess Parker and Sam Emery. Homecooked Comics Festival returns to Northcote Town Hall on April 15 and will feature 40-odd tables of local comics artists selling their wares! It’ll also be Sarah Howell’s final festival as director -- she’s preparing to hand over to a new director shortly. We also continue to host our free monthly drawing night at the studio (first Wed of the month), and will be running kids classes during the school holidays. The next ones are on the 18th and 25th of Jan. Parents can contact [email protected].
