Magnolia Grandiflora is indigenous to the southeastern United States, where it grows wild in the woods, but is also cultivated here and elsewhere as an ornamental tree. The species is said to be 95 million years old, strong and resistent to pests. Though some associate it with the antebellum era, I see it as the shining light of the resilience of the human spirit and our ability to overcome the oppressions of all eras, more symbolic of our national unity than of the human rights abuses that led to the Civil War that almost severed us.
