I feel like an Ent today, and am sorry to report that the great old Oak that defined the magical beauty of the Miccosukee Greenway has been butchered. Its remains were callously dumped in a copse that was a bird habitat. I do not know if the reason was destruction for money, as I saw at an historic city cemetery earlier this year, or because a branch of the tree had split and fallen. Regardless, the ignorance of biology and environmental habitats that has become so typical in recent years was clearly a component of the act. Experiencing environmental destruction is like experiencing a death in the family.
