TMP: It really is THE shit.

It's no secret that I <3 Star Trek: The Motion Picture like nobody's business. I love talking about it and always try to snag up any merch in relation to it. I know most fans HATE this movie but I never understood why.

Reasons you should love ST: TMP:

We get to see Vulcan up close and personal for the first time since Amok Time, in particular the Pasutra t’Tai-la, the Plains of Gol where Spock is undergoing a ritual to purge all emotion and become a Kolinahru.

We also hear spoken Vuhlkansu, which inspired the work of Mark Gardner who created the Modern Golic Vulcan language.

Sem-rik.. (Fascinating!) 

Spock proves once again he is still the most fashionable of our favorite trio in his ceremonial pelal. Yeah, I'm a-looking... and I'm a-liking...

The refitted Enterprise looks fucking bomb. Don't tell me you didn't swoon a little. The gratuitous fly-by was admittedly kind of long... get the hell over it. She's beautiful and deserves to be gazed upon with your full attention. Just look at those nacelles... breathtaking.

The story. It's really quite good, even if it is a rehash of TOS: The Changeling. When you consider how robotics and computers were still relatively in the dark ages in 1980, this movie is somewhat scary in its overall message.

Any show of resistance would be futile..." without this movie, writers may never have been influenced to write about such things as the Borg in TNG.

Also... Motherfucking friendship. The TMP novel introduced the infamous word t'hy'la, which still serves to titillate and unnerve Trekkies around the galaxy. Good.  The Spirk phenomenon emerges... fandom would never be the same or as safe ever again. You may not agree with it, but you can't deny the unique impact this has had in a social context. Psychologically and sociologically, its quite fascinating. 

Breaking all the rules of convention... fuck yeah, Star Trek.

And most importantly, 

This movie spawned a fabulous series of Trek films, as well as helped eventually usher in a whole new era of television episodes in TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT. So, the next time you find yourself being unappreciative of the merits of TMP, I'd think again.  Beam me the hell up, I'm sold.

It's Saturday night and of course this means time for reflecting on the Star Trek universe. I love Star Trek into Darkness. It is a great sci-fi action film, but as a Trekkie I hate it. It pisses all over the cannon (as did the first new gen Star Trek film, but I loved that too) feeling torn as usual. Always wondering where this leaves cannon. Technically the only Star Trek series we can now take to be as it was is Enterprise...where does this leave everything else? This frustrates me no end.

Additionally, in Into Darkness, I guess we consider Marcus as the main 'baddy'. Are we supposed to forget he appeared in Enterprise not too many years ago as John Frederick Paxton? It's not like other characters within the universe where actors might play multiple characters but 'hide' under prosthetics in order to repeatedly crop up along the way. I just couldn't shake this thought throughout the film. I guess for the casual fan this wouldn't have been a problem though.

Anywho, rant over. Don't get me wrong, I love Trek in any way. I love the new films...and this is what bothers me. Oh well!

It's awkward for me, liking AOS Trek, when I've been a lifelong Trekkie.  I grew up with the syndicated Original Series.  I grew up with the movies.  I can tell you where I was during the pilot AND the series finale for Next Generation.

There are those within the Trek fandom who look down on those who enjoy the characters created with Abrams NuTrek, especially in light of the fact that he really wasn't a fan.  Yes, that still boggles my mind. How can you, in good conscience, write a script and cast actors to such an iconic series when you, yourself, are not a fan?

But he's not.  And I am.

And you know what?  I LOVED the casting choices for AOS Trek.  I really did.  And I'm not the only one.  Those haters who claim that those of us who like the AOS cast are really posers and wannabe Trekkies, need I remind you that Leonard Nimoy said this?:

"When Karl Urban introduced himself as Leonard McCoy and shook hands with Chris Pine, I burst into tears. That performance of his is so moving, so touching and so powerful as Doctor McCoy, that I think D. Kelley [DeForest] would be smiling, and maybe in tears as well."  

This is a direct quote from this particular interview.

So hate on me for being a fan of Urban's.  Hate on me for being a fan of his portrayal of Bones.  I'm not the only one who loved it.  And while I feel he had a great disservice done to him during Into Darkness (don't EVEN get me started on that hot mess), I still feel that he and the rest of the cast of AOS Trek were spot on.
