Public Relations Intern

Job description
The Public Relations Intern will assist the Communication Department by building awareness of the services and programs offered by the Red Cross in theChicagoarea through a variety of communications functions. This position offers the opportunity to sharpen basic public relations skills at the world’s leading humanitarian organization. This position will play role in building the future image of the second largest Red Cross chapter in theUS.
Responsibilities
Assist with various external communications campaigns by researching, writing press releases, media lists and contacting local media to place stories.
Carry out research projects as assigned.
Assist the department in community, media and internal relations during disaster situations. This may include going to a disaster site, such as a house fire, answering media calls or monitoring news reports.
Provide administrative support as needed.
Creating and crafting media relations products and pitching to media as appropriate.
Any other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Candidates must demonstrate strong writing, research, editing and interpersonal communication skills
Must have the ability to plan, manage time, think and work independently and be willing to take on challenging tasks
Must have strong computer skills: proficiency in MS Office Suite, Internet and basic knowledge of social media platforms (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, etc.)
Must have some coursework in journalism, public relations, communication or related field
Must be able to work at least 3 days per week

Community Partnerships Intern

Job description
Under the supervision of the Director of External Operations, this position will work with the Manager of Community Partnerships, Government Liaison, and other partners to coordinate with community response and recovery organizations through local collaborative groups such as Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD). This position will engage the labor and business communities and work to ensure people with disabilities, racial and ethnic minorities, various religious groups, immigrants, people with limited English proficiency (LEP), seniors, children, the LGBT community, lower income families and pet owners are all receiving equitable and appropriate services from the American Red Cross. Effective, cooperative and collaborative working relationships with community and national partners are a critical component of a successful relief operation.
Responsibilities
Works in conjunction with the Director of External Operations to establish relationships with community leaders and organizations in disaster response activities for the purposes of building response capacity
Coordinating response activities
Integrating expertise in serving diverse communities and providing channels to reach traditionally underserved communities.
Creating/updating tracking system for volunteer engagement to gage the level of activity and link the volunteer with available opportunities to support the chapter in relationship management.
Assist with volunteer management and coordination with community partners

Qualifications

Disaster Services Intern

The Donor Relations Intern would support the Development Associate for Donor Relations on the Individual Giving fundraising team. This intern will gain experience in a wide variety of fundraising activities, such as direct donor contact, maintaining the Raiser’s Edge database, creative writing, and marketing. The Donor Relations Intern will work with the Development Associate on the strategy and development of various fundraising programs. We are looking for someone who is passionate, creative and willing to learn about non-profit fundraising.
Responsibilities
Support in the creation of a marketing strategy and communication tools for various programs (matching gifts, Vehicle and Boat Donations, and Tribute Giving)
Manage and take leadership for logistics associated with all projects created from the programs above (i.e. creating promotional materials, meeting with appropriate colleagues, developing detailed plans for execution)
Write meaningful acknowledgement letters and assist in the creation of custom letters as needed
Assist with thank you calls and the stewardship of donors
Act as point of contact for addressing any issues with processing donor gifts
Update Raisers Edge and other databases as needed for donor outreach

Community Prepardness Intern

The Community Outreach Intern will assist in the development of community preparedness programs including fire and flood prevention programs, corporate preparedness events, and other hazard specific programming through research, community outreach, and volunteer capacity building. Blood Services Intern
The Blood Services Intern will be responsible for assisting the Blood Services Department with blood donor recruitment and coordinating blood drives. This position will focus on establishing and building relationships with organizations that host event drives. The Blood Services Intern will also work in conjunction with marketing programs like Empower Youth, Chicago White Sox and hospital programs to increase blood donations.

Mass Care Internship at the American Red Cross
Work Schedule: 10 hrs/week

The Mass Care Intern will support the American Red Cross’ recruiting and maintenance of shelter agreements within one or more of the counties we serve. The intern will also frequently be visiting schools, park districts and other partners to secure agreements and survey facilities for ADA-compliancy and other capacity concerns. A significant portion of the position will be involved with managing the National Shelter Database (NSS) and updating hundreds of shelter entries in the database. The intern will also be involved with recruiting and supporting a regional volunteer team that will be responsible for managing the shelter relationships in their area. Based on the availability, we expect that the interns will be able to assist at sheltering and other Mass Care disaster operations. A minimum of four training courses will also be provided at the beginning of the term.
Responsibilities
Contact schools, park districts, and houses of worship to contact and agreement information
Recruit new shelter facilities within the county
Make contact with a minimum of 50 facilities and perform at least two site visits per week
Become proficient in managing the National Shelter System (NSS), a tracking system for shelter profiles
Conduct on-site surveys of current and new shelter facilities
Recruit and oversee volunteers to assist with the above mentioned activities
Assist in creating shelter and mass care plans within the county
Attend Disaster Services training courses and responses as able
Qualifications
