Rain barrel fail
My wife got the mulch down in the front yard triangle bed while I started clearing the new bed in the back yard. She went to water it once it was all done... whoops I had left the rain barrel on and it was empty. :`(
We did what I never wanted to do... turn the outside tap on. Bucket loads of water were used to give the triangle bed its first big watering. Only a single turtle head looked like it needed it, but better safe than sorry I guess?
On that note we have been trying to get a second (or third) rain barrel but haven't had much luck. I knew of the TRCA's artist/paint a rain barrel auction and figured we'd get one from there. I didn't read the fine print and it is available in Caledon only. For some reason I assume we'd pick them up at their office in Downsview Park. Today was a Community Environment Day in our neighbourhood, where the City's water department used to sell rain barrels... they no longer carry them. I don't want to support Canadian Tire, and our Rona doesn't stock them. She found a nice looking wooden one on Kijiji, but it was out in Etobicoke. Found a few at Toronto Botanical Gardens which is bike-able but we'd have to use the trailer for the barrel and not my daughter and it is on the outside of her maximum bike range atm.
Got everything in the front yard triangle bed into the ground. Was a chilly morning, 11 degrees. Should be good for the plants the cooler temps? Going to leave the mulching and the border bricks to the kids, and start cutting down and clearing the backyard garage bed. Or go back to bed myself, yawn.
Night planting
Is that a thing? Night gardening? I didn't mean to, but once I finally got going I didn't really want to pack it in just because the sun was setting. I started putting stuff into the ground at about 8:30pm and decided to come in at 11:23pm. My son helped me put in the first thing, a meadowsweet bush and he was very happy to be of help. I think he'll be a tad disappointed in how much I got done, but if he wakes up with me, he'll be a big help in the morning. Alarm set for 5:22 tomorrow to finish this first patch before the sun dries it all out too much. I have to add this is the first time in about a year I've had the alarm set.
