Australian Cameron McEvoy is not only an accomplished athlete, but he has used the same work ethic and commitment that has created success in the pool to excel in the classroom...
As a math and physics oriented person, I really appreciate Cam McEvoy as a swimmer and physicist and also his attempt at explaining training and improvement in terms of the triangle inequality.
I guess my best attempt at explaining it in a differential equation/calculus is
∫d(improvement Training) = improvements Training > Improvement Race

Project Euler Problem iii
Another brute force solution to a project euler problem. How many right triangles can you make on a evenly spaced 50x50 grid, where one vertex is on the corner of the grid. I started by counting them, but then ran into trouble with the triangles that do not have a horizontal or vertical line. So I went with the brute force method. 1) for every combination of x1, y1, x2 and y2; compute the distance between the points 2) see if the triangle complies with a^2+b^2=c^2. Then I realized that this counted *many* degenerate shapes, when the triangle was on a straight line and a few other wierd things. My solution was to: 3) check the resultant triangle against the triangle inequality: a+b should be bigger than c. R code below:
d=50 count=0 e=0.000001 for( xa in 0:d ){ for( ya in 0:d ){ for( xb in 0:d ){ for( yb in 0:d ){ a1=sqrt(xa^2+ya^2) a2=sqrt(xb^2+yb^2) a3=sqrt((xa-xb)^2+(ya-yb)^2) pts=sort(c(a1,a2,a3)) a=pts[1];b=pts[2];c=pts[3] if( a +b>c & abs((a^2+b^2) - (c^2)) < e) { count=count+1 }}}}}} count/2 #because the two points are interchangeable
I was around the 4800th person to waste my time solving this problem.
