winter crane fly & snow leopard picmix
you know how for each field of study or job, you'll find weirdly specific discourse that no one outside of that field would even consider? I was writing an oc who is an entomologist and it got me curious if there's any weirdly specific entomology discourse you have strong opinions on that you might like to share
Are termites a type of cockroach?
the answer is Yes.
entomologists were very angry about this for a very long time. Most people have come to accept that yeah, termites are social cockroaches, but some people are definitely still bitter about it. No new evidence came out, people just got tired of fighting and said, "Fine. Get your stupid DNA evidence out of my face, I don't want to die on this hill anymore"
Other weirdly specific entomology discourse revolves around whatever bug you study. Like, I'm obsessed with winter crane flies, and while I was researching them, I saw another entomologist comment that crane flies are objectively the least interesting insect known to science and I wanted to hunt that motherfucker down and hit him over the head with a chair. Do you have any idea how exciting the winter crane fly is?? Holy shit. They're one of the only insects known to forensic science that can give investigators insect evidence in the wintertime, and they're one of the least studied insects for how widespread they are.

Because capitalism.
("They are of no economic importance.")
every so-called insect lover who has ever insulted a crane fly can get the fuck out of my face. you disgust me, you filthy capitalist. i hope crane flies form dancing, loose swarms of mostly males over your dead body on a soggy winter day and people never find your body because they didn't bother paying attention to the sacred creatures performing your last rites.
