“ —- no, don’t say that. ” that is the one sentence he doesn’t ever want to hear coming from his daughter again. he knew children were like that, no matter how old they grew, they were going to question everything, and want the opposite of what’s happening. he was trying to give edie a good life, a simple but better life, so that she wouldn’t lead a life similar to his. it even hurt more, especially considering his situation with paralysis, edie was a miracle child, and they tried so hard to actually have her.

in all honesty ? his heart is broken because he said the exact same thing to his own mother when he was a kid.

“ edie, listen. whatever y’do, whatever y’say, me an’ mom are gonna be proud a’ya. ” a quick smile, “ ‘sides, we made ya so y’can take over th’world an’ show what yer made of. ”

( he waits by the school gate, every second counting down to the final bell strung up another reason as to why this was a terrible idea. the voice that had softly persuaded him to do this in the first place had suddenly absconded - notably absent now that he’d taken the plunge.

he turned the small present over in his hands, the red and gold wrapping getting a little creased at the edges thank to his incessant pawing; he should leave. barney would be livid over this. but there was the bell - and the relative silence shattered by the chaotic mumbles and chatter of children escaping school for the weekend.

the nervous flutter didn’t go - it tripled. his stomach knotting and throat arid, crying out for something to ease its thirst. but harold forced a smile as a certain girl forced her way though two older girls, intent on having their conversation in the middle of the path. )

“— it’s a little late, but I got you a Christmas present, Edie.”
