the music from the speaker ebbs and flows like the sea with the lute dancing lightly over the deep rhythmic beats of the drums that steadies her breath and heartbeat.

they pull back the string slowly, feeling the way it pulls against their fingertips. a deep breath, the brush of her thumb against her chin. release. thunk. right next to the center. she fights the twitch of a smile at the corner of her mouth.

a more imprudent, more foolishly logical vulcan, might have dared to chastize the admiral for the delay. vulcans were never late. this lapse in time demonstrated, in their eyes, that the rumors were true. their highest ranking starfleet officer had grown too human, a symptom of the lack of character vulcans demonstrated outside of their planet.

luckily for both of them, t'lyn was too grateful for the extra time to prepare herself, to even consider such an affront. she rose, greeted her in their ways, and remained standing, waiting for her superior to relax before she could return to her seat, a creature of habit and tradition, even as her eyes greedily take in, with a curiosity that should have been reigned in long ago, the legend.

Sybok finds himself straightening his back, even holding his breath for a long moment, as if he's been caught doing something wrong. He's relieved that his father isn't here, but he can imagine the look he'd get for failing to control his emotions so thoroughly that a Human would notice.

As much as Sarek seems to respect and care for his wife, Sybok knows that he is to consider her first and foremost a Human. He is not necessarily sure what she considers him.

"The lesson is... challenging." He cringes at his own pause. It took him too long to find an appropriate word. He wants to turn off his screen. She might see the topic--wildlife specific to the Forge--and know. He's not sure if she knows the details, but surely Sarek has mentioned to her that the Forge is where his mother died. "Animal biology is not my best subject," he adds quickly.

Sarek raises an eyebrow, and one might even detect a hint of amusement in his expression. Even the most formal Humans are casual by Vulcan standards, and it's something he secretly enjoys about them. He considers the research he's done, imagining how another Human night react to such a question, but nothing seems appropriate.

Besides, he's found that some Humans find Vulcan social norms as entertaining as he finds Human social norms.

"I could see to it that I am," he says evenly. Then, "For what purpose?"
