In woodland Oxalis acetosella (wood sorrel, alleluia) forms distinctive clumps, often growing from the moss on fallen logs. The delicate white flowers bloom around Eastertime and give rise to the common name of 'alleluia'.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

The model organism I used during my PhD project with Professor Colin Turnbull at Imperial College London was the clover-like plant Medicago truncatula.

The symbol of St. Patrick's Day, an Irish Shamrock, is a stylised depiction of a clover, one of the plant species in the genus Trifolium.

Both Medicago truncatula and clover belong to the same plant family, Fabaceae. Both shamrocks and Medicago have leaves composed of three leaflets. This is known botanically as a "trifoliate" leaf, although genetic variation can produce four leaflets instead of the usual three in both clover and Medicago.

These bunches of flattened, winged seeds provide autumn interest on the large, deciduous shrub or tree Ptelea trifoliata (hop tree, stinking ash, wafer ash). As the specific name indicates it has tripartite leaves which are aromatic, as are the star-shaped, pale green flowers as well as the bark.

#trifoliate ...trying to find out what kind though. The word trifoliate actually only refers to the LEAFLETS. This seedling has 3 leafs and three side branches at each node and continues to grow that way. Is that a whorled trifoliate? Do I top it? Some say it stops the 3 side branches when it hits alternate?
