trinesrus replied to your video “how 2 scalp ur fanbase in one opening it’s got everything! good guys,...”
Awakening spans like, two whole continents and an island or two, and yet Fates' world still feels bigger to me somehow, and I feel like the opening cinematics are at least part of why
I’ve always felt the same, too. I started with Awakening and therefore my opinion is worth less than dirt to the majority of the fandom--cough--but I found the world of Hoshido and Nohr a hell of a lot more compelling.
And it’s not just the opening that gives you information--a lot of it is in stuff that’s just...presented. FE14 does a lot of gameplay storytelling IMO. Hoshido doesn’t have armored units. Hoshido doesn’t have horses. Nohr has a lot of mixed-expertise units but few units with the freedom to hyperspecialize. The fundamental difference between the two is really emphasized in Japanese--all Hoshido class names are written with kanji, and all Nohr class names are written with katakana. Even series mainstays like Mercenary and Thief (which have historically been written in kanji) are specifically written in katakana in Fates.
All builds up to a picture of two countries with pretty different resources. In Nohr you have metal and mounts, but you’ve got to be an all-rounder because you can’t rely on others to watch your back. Hoshido has fewer resources when it comes to raw weaponry--they don’t have heavy armor or cavalry and they don’t use any beast/proxy units like Faceless or golems--but they have enough bounty to afford to hyperspecialize in magic or shuriken or katana or lance or bows.
You can question the logic of this in a fridge sense--where does Nohr get the food for their mounts, which factually cost way more to feed than people?--but it does all scan in a raw, instinctive gameplay sense. Hoshido gets all the S-class specialists. Nohr gets all the guys that have to juggle multiple responsibilities or make up for their crap growths/bases with skills (cough wary fighter). Even a more direct comparison--when it comes to Locktouch, Hoshido gets it in the form of honorable ninjas who’ve guarded the royal family for generations with an impeccable pedigree. Nohr gets it in the form of greasy lowlives.
Like...this feels different and it’s like supposed to! On top of that, almost all of Hoshido’s retainers are nobles practically born to the position, and Nohr’s are mostly randos or gutter trash. In Hoshido, Shara is anxious about being a woman in love with a woman. In Nohr, Zero is confident in asking another man to marry him. Camilla would have become queen of Nohr before Hinoka became queen of Hoshido (personal preferences of the women in question notwithstanding).
I associate you with that like watermelon-y combination of pink and green? But like the soft, pastel variation and not the neon variant. Also Piplup. (Now I'm imagining a watermelon-colored Piplup)
that’s really nice omg (also for the record i just tried to draw a watermelon piplup but since i only have highlighters on me it didn’t turn out well rip)
These are some of the great Ace Attorney fics out there♥

Narumitsu.
Miles desperately needs a way to get rid of an unwanted admirer, and what better way is there than to pretend to date his very male, straight best friend and rival? It sounded so foolproof in his head...
(I love this, and I’m waiting sort-of patiently on chapter 17.)

Klapollo.
Klavier has this way of looking at Apollo, leaning down with his head slightly tilted and a soft smile on his lips. It's just another way of mocking him. It has to be.

Klapollo, Narumitsu.
Apollo's house is visited by ghosts. Somehow, this is the least of his worries.

★ Hot for Justice by @ikiiceland
Klapollo
After the events of State v. Misham, Klavier finds himself in a slump, stressed at the prosecutor's office and unable to pen new songs. To his surprise, he finds creative inspiration—and unexpected feelings—spending time with Apollo and is able to write and record plenty of new material. (I cry every time)
★ Legal Partners by Miggy
Narumitsu, Klapollo, Klema
Miles Edgeworth isn't totally sure how he ended up in this bet to demonstrate the strength of his and Phoenix Wright's (entirely professional and platonic! really!) relationship, but he knows it's Klavier's fault.

★ Working in Watercolours by @milesphoenix

In his university years, Phoenix goes on a school trip to Europe to study art and art history abroad. But for Phoenix, the trip is about more than discovering Monet's inspiration; it's about finding someone he hasn't seen since his childhood.

Narumitsu
It started with a glimpse of spiky hair in the library, and then by not-so coincidentally being outside just the right courtroom at the right time, and things start to slip from there.
★ You and Me and My Ghost Roommate Makes Three by @chicago-poet
Miles Edgeworth has a ghost problem. Well, he has a lot of problems. But his apartment isn’t haunted. If you asked, he would look at you sourly as if you had told a particular distasteful joke and say: “No, of course not. The windows have always rattled ominously, and only sometimes do my tea cups float by themselves. It happens to everyone.”
trinesrus replied to your post “alright what’s the Greatest Hits of cut from fates elfie’s personality...”
I mean...while the localization doesn't specifically mention dead kids, it didn't specifically exclude them, either (as far as I remember). I'd naturally assumed dead kids were on the table based on history, so it's always a trip for me encountering other localization fans who DON'T realize there used to be more siblings.
Pardon the late response, but this is such a fascinating topic to me. The localization did specifically remove all reference to dead children. Where the original text specified that the children of the concubines killed one another, the localization walks that back to “the suitors fought their own family members” (which, what does that even mean??).
So someone coming to Fates with no previous online knowledge, just the game itself, is very unlikely to assume that Marx executed siblings. Nyx/Marx, the support that spells out Marx’s despair most explicitly, loses its ambiguity to say that Xander regrets killing enemies during war where Marx said he regrets killing enemies in fighting (implication: half-sibs are a potential regret under ‘fighting’, but not ‘war’. Savvy readers might note that it doesn’t even make sense for Marx to feel bad about enemies killed in war because the Faceless have been used against Hoshido for his entire adult life but uhh Treehouse doesn’t care about making sense so fuck you).
tl;dr the localization doesn’t specifically deny dead children but it also deletes all specific mention of them, instead inviting the assumption that the concubines killed their own parents or siblings for...some reason. Localization-only fans are often confused.
trinesrus replied to your post: trinesrus replied to your post “alright what’s...
By “didn’t specifically exclude” I meant in the sense that it could still be gathered (in my case, from vague historical knowledge). It absolutely is a case of moving from text to subtext and adding some weird implications in the refusal to discuss it explicitly. This is really interesting to me, too, just coming from the other side: “I came to this conclusion from the localization first, and the original actually validates my interpretation?”
Yeah, it ended up being the kind of situation where how you interpreted what the game gave you depended on...well, you.
If I were looking at that text blind, I think my conclusion would be “it would make the most sense if the concubines’ children killed one another, but this dialog specifies it was the concubines’ families that killed one another. When I use ‘x’s family’ for an adult, I almost always mean their parents and siblings. If I meant to refer to x’s children, I’d say x’s children. The support goes out of its way to not say x’s children, so it must be purposefully specifying that the concubines’ siblings and parents killed one another for...some reason?”
Of course, when you look at the context of the conversation, concubines’ children is the only thing that makes sense because Elise is comparing their current situation to the past one, as in “what if we children had to kill one another again”. But the dialog seems to push you away from that conclusion by always avoiding the word siblings and using the generic family instead.
I probably would have thought there was some kind of mistake or the support was just badly written/translated (which, well...it is).
they-better-be-mysterious replied to your post“I’m on my third or fourth day downloading CC so I can give everyone...”
oh man i made Sims 3 lag so bad from CC it was unplayable. Plus I downloaded a house that literally wouldn't let me designate a front door so I had to punch a hole in the wall to let them in-- after I redesigned it to be just the way I wanted it and everything...
My Sims 3 took like 20 minutes to load and I would get so neurotic about figuring out which CC was rotten and making the game hang/crash that I would spend weeks carefully putting back in small amounts of CC, and then letting it load up, and seeing what happened, then force quit and narrow it down until I found each bad file. djsfhldkjsfks
