if there was one place that vasily could feel welcome, even when he wasn't necessarily home in ravka, it was always the stables. he could be anywhere and, as long as he could find the stables, he'd be okay. it took some convincing from the guards, that yes, he really is going there. he's not going anywhere else. they could even come with him, if they liked. ( they didn't ) that didn't stop them from hovering a bit away, still keeping their distance, but vasily could see them. he didn't mind, his own father would have done the same.
he's surprised when he realizes he's not alone, the prince's confidant standing in front of what vasily assumes is her own horse. "sir bérénice! my apologizes, i figured the stables to be empty at this hour. i don't mean to intrude."
