Triple Dead Combo - Chapter 14 - SupernovaSpace3 - The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller [Archive of Our Own]
“Hello? Is this Nestor speaking?”
“This is his son, Thrasymedes. How can I help you?” Oh gods, that scary man.
Eeeee no no no don't like you
“Could I please speak to Nestor?” Trying to keep his voice cool.
“What for?”
Shut up and give the phone to him
“Please, could I just speak to him?” What? No yelling this time? Such growth in a short span of time. Hats off to him.
Applause for Thrasymedes everyone
A sigh cracked across the line, “Sure.” Achilles could hear the faint calling of Dad! and walking and rustling as the phone charged hands. Now a new voice spoke, “Hello?”
“Nestor, it's me, Achilles.”
Phew
“Heh?” Confused.
Oh come on

Achilles gently smiled as he saw the book. It was a small smile, no teeth, just the pulling of a corner of his pink lips.
“You read Roald Dahl too?” Achilles spoke quietly into the air.
Of course he did. He devoured those books like there was no tomorrow. Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, Boy, everytime he went to the library, he would search for his books. That copy was a birthday gift. He couldn't remember who gave it to him, just that once he got it, he forgot all about his cake and presents and immediately went to read. His mother had to drag him back to the party.
He smiled. Memories. They were all he had left.
“Looks like that's one way we're similar, Patroclus.”
Well, he couldn't really-.. Wait.
How did Achilles know his name?
Back again to the perusing of old items, Achilles placed the book gently in one of the three piles he had made. Later he would divide them even further but for now, three piles.
How did Achilles know his name?

Achilles was sitting out in the sun-spilled verandah with a book held open in one hand, a knee drawn up to his chest, pink peony lips pursed, green eyes focused, roving over the words on the page, dancing with them. Patroclus watched the scene in the book change just by looking at Achilles' face.
How his eyebrows raised.
How his lips quirked.
How his eyes crinkled.
How his mouth pouted.
The little gasps he drew in at intervals.
The bouncing of his foot when the scene became thrilling.
The way he bit his lip.
The way his eyes turned animated, wild images moving in his mind, images Patroclus wished to see.
Patroclus was thoroughly, utterly mesmerized.
Alright we're at a point in Triple Dead Combo where I can FINALLY rant about some things I've been obsessing over.
It's more about the writing style really, lol.
First up, Patroclus. I think I went a bit overboard with him describing his surroundings (my boy loves his garden, alright?). I actually wrote his over-descriptive self when I was feeling completely un-motivated (is that a word?). It felt easier to describe the surroundings than his feelings. And that's part of his character too. He tends to look outside rather than within. There are parts of his writing that are mildly influenced by God of Small Things and other books I've read.
Achilles: The whole italicised thought process stuff in between his actions is actually related to how I think, how my thoughts wander or make up really random stuff in the middle of serious things. Writing Achilles is very personal to me. A lot of the things he's done, I've done or thought of doing as well. A lot of the emotions he feels or projects are based off of my experiences. I just love writing him.
Ajax: HE'S MY DARLING. His writing style is based off Tomb of Sand by Geetanjali Shree. I feel it's more apt for him, considering his past. His thoughts flow freely and without inhibition. He possesses an almost childlike innocence and the emotions he feels are pure and without hindrance. He has no prejudice. To write him, I go into a completely different headspace and just start typing everything that comes to my mind, all the nonsense, all the deep thoughts, everything. Just pour everything I have into it.
Briseis: She is personally the hardest for me to write. I want her to be eloquent. She's a smart person and she knows it and utilises it. She also has this classic teenager overconfidence and ego like, "I know better than all you old people" kind of thing. Maybe I've exaggerated it in writing a bit but it all eventually plays out well (I think). Her writing style is influenced by the Ibis Trilogy by Amitav Ghosh. I like how detailed and eloquent he's written the characters and tried to aim for something similar.
Ajax and Briseis' writing styles don't follow what is usually or currently considered as good writing, with many things that I've seen people here frown about on the internet like the "show, don't tell", other things. Heck, Ajax doesn't even follow proper punctuation. But in the end, all the so-called rules that we see in tags and Pinterest and other sites aren't really rules. They're guidelines. You're not going to die if you don't follow them. Your writing isn't going to crash and burn if you don't write in present tense or first person. It's your words, your emotions, your views and finally, your story. You decide what happens to it. The guidelines are there to hold your hand, not to be your crutch. And in the end, it's what makes it unique. And it truly becomes your story.
Triple Dead Combo - Chapter 16 - SupernovaSpace3 - The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller [Archive of Our Own]
OPUS: The body of a 26 year old man was retrieved from a well in his house in Colver Road on Friday, 30th of June 2016 by local police.
The body of Patroclus Menoitiades, a second year M.Sc student of Argos Institute of Science and Education Research (AISER) was found in a well in the compound of his house by his mother who had gone to investigate the foul smell emanating from the structure. Investigation by the Opus Police is still ongoing as to whether this was a suicide or foul play.
The deceased’s family stated that Patroclus had been depressed ever since he came back from university and had lashed out multiple times towards them before storming off to his friends house. He then did not return home and assuming him to be at his friends place, his family did not investigate further into the situation.
“We tried to take him for therapy for his depression but he got angry and left. He always would go to his friends place and stay there for a couple of days so we didn't think much about it.” Patroclus’ uncle spoke to MT.
The body has been sent to Hestia Medical Institute for the autopsy. No suicide note was found. The police are currently interrogating Patroclus’ friends and family. MT has tried contacting AISER, the institute in which Patroclus had been doing his Masters degree but received no response.

I'm at 42,496 words in Triple Dead Combo and now I'm stuck. I'm just stuck.
So, it's going to be on a bit of a pause while I work in the rest of my works. They're all just zooming about in my head, making my life hell.
I wrote Triple Dead Combo in the holidays, after I had finished my exams and had plenty of free time to read and write. Now I don't have that much freedom. Like, I'm literally waking up at 5 am and going to sleep at 2 am 😅
I think I've posted half of what I've written, not quite sure. But I'll be posting a bit slower, I don't want to dump everything too soon and then leave you in a long silent period. I don't like the silent periods. I end up forgetting about my fics then lmao.
But gonna work on the other stuff too now. My brain is exploding.

The well was there. The well was always there.
If he looked into it now, all he would be able to see was an inky black chasm, yawning and opening its mouth to swallow him whole like it had all those years ago.
He didn't want to go down there again, to where the water lay stagnant and still, quiet and craving, where the walls loomed and swallowed you whole and the world outside was a circle of the distant, cold sky.
He could hear it still, feel it still, see it still. Falling. Wind rushing past his ears, head first as the sky turned smaller.
The water.
He stepped back from the edge of the well and went to the garden as fast as his feet could take him.
