I don’t know why it floated back into my head, but I had to ask my sister earlier if she remembered the animated movie about the grandma looking for her bicycle-obsessed son (grandson?) who’d been kidnapped by the mob for gambling and entertainment purposes, and went on an odyssey with her dog to the big city to get him back, running into three ancient ex-vaudeville stars from the thirties who help her rescue him. Or, rather, I intended to ask her that, but even as I started the sentence I remembered that it was The Triplets of Belleville (2003).
So. Um. If you ever want to watch a trippy as fuck French animated film? It’s. It’s a trip.
(Caveat: The movie does explore the entertainment world of the 30s, with all the extremely up front racism and other isms that entails. Also, the art style is trippy. There’s a lot of 30s influence in there, if you’ve ever watched early 20th century cartoons. As a kid I did find it pretty freaky, trippy, and memorable, but it’s likely not to everyone’s taste).
