The curious pendant white and purple flowers of the vigorous, tropical climber Passiflora nigradenia (passionflower) are growing over the path in the warm glasshouse of Cambridge Botanical Garden, UK. This plant occurs naturally in Bolivia where it must look spectacular in the wild. To achieve fruit there needs to be a another plant for pollination.

The highly distinctive white and blue-black fruit of the climber Clerodendrum schweinfurthii (glory flower climber) certainly attract attention. They result from the clusters of fragrant, white flowers which appeared along the woody stems in the spring. It is said to be a resilient climber in tropical and sub-tropical conditions thriving in dappled light and tolerant of drought. This specimen was thriving in the glasshouse corridor of Cambridge Botanical Garden, UK, where there are a range of curiosities and treasures to admire.

Flowering in the glasshouse corridor of Cambridge Botanic Gardens, UK, is the tropical South American climber Petrea volubilis (purple wreath, queen's wreath, sand paper). This plant was named to commemorate Lord Petre who, in the eighteenth century, was famous for his collection of exotic plants which he cultivated in England.

In the tropical glasshouses at Cambridge Botanic Garden, Cambridge, UK, the rather strange flowers of Aristolochia cathcartii (Dutchman's pipe) are appearing. This woody climber has tubular, inflated cream flowers with purple markings. The mouth of the flower has an edge of purple hairs that imprison flies and beetles attracted by the smell of rotting flesh. The insects are then covered in pollen and the hairs wither to allow the pollinators to visit the next flower.

In the Princess of Wales Glasshouse, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, the Thunbergia mysorensis (Mysore clock vine, brick & butter vine, lady's slipper vine, dolls' shoes) was creating an eye catching display. This vigorous evergreen climber has twining stems up to 6m, the 2-lipped flowers have a gaping yellow throat and reflexed dark red lobes. It needs to be grown in the UK under glass in a loam-based potting compost with bright filtered light and shade from hot sun.
