Tropika Malaysian Cuisine (via delivery)
Earlier this month, my coworker DT & I were working Saturday together & we ordered delivery from Tropika to our work place :P it was exciting! I’ve still been staying in .. *sigh* I don’t know; like on one hand, I know this is gonna be the new normal but I still have doubts & general uneasiness about going to crowded places, esp restaurants, where I’m exposing my face completely (in order to eat). So yeah, I’m still staying in~
Tropika Malaysian Cuisine is located in the south side now but when they had a location in the west side, I had gone there with university classmates for a meal. I remember enjoying my experience there & the food was good. I haven’t been ever since!
I ordered 1 order of their roti canai ($5.50). Ppl at work who’s eaten there said this is their must-have, so I went with their recommendation. The roti was pretty much cold when I was home so I heated it up in the toaster oven. Very chewy & slightly sweet. I’m certain I could have just eaten it on its own; however, it comes with a nice curry dipping sauce, which I also loved! It was slightly spicy (I’d say maybe 1.25/10!), highly sweet & the curry flavour wasn’t that strong. I think it’s child-friendly. My 6-yr old niece tried it & she was “okay” with it haha anyway, I enjoyed this appetizer a lot~ I wished they had option for an extra roti-only add-on bcos we had a lot of sauce left over. Oh! & I wished the sauce was slightly more thick... it was very watery.
Char Hor Fun ($17) - stir-fried flat rice noodle with chicken, shrimp, & spinach in an egg-glazed sauce. This wasn’t spicy & I ordered it mainly bcos my nieces were gonna eat it too so I gotta choose some non-spicy item(s). This was very disappointing, but I think it is honestly just my personal preference. Firstly, this was BLAND, like ... with caplocks. It had a light soy-sauce flavour but was still rather flavourless. It was rich in aroma though, bcos they put a LOT of sesame oil on this. It was crazy! I opened the box & was instantaneously shocked by the smell :O I’d say it came with a good quantity for $17 but . .. we had to add our own sauce to it.
I don’t want to compare but I have to bcos .. . yes haha you know Double Greetings...... I know it’s “Malaysian” cuisine vs “Cantonese” style cuisine but Double Greetings saucy flat noodles have that wok/smokiness to it still. This hor fun just did not. At all. & it was so lacking in comparison to the ones we’ve eaten at Double Greetings.
Beef & basil-fried rice ($17). WOOOWWWWWW!! This was amazingggg! It had smokiness to it! Can’t say it had a lot of beef but it was an excellent fried rice. Rice was slightly stiff but loose. Well-flavoured; quite spicy so not for those who can’t handle spicy foods. Basil flavour was there but not strong. Overall, I was really happy about this & would order it again!
Yeah, 2/3 items were greatly satisfying!
