Troy Michael Kell, is a Utah State Prison Death row inmate. Kell committed his first murder in Las Vegas Nevada. He murdered James “Cotton” Kelly for harrassing and stalking his child hood friend Sandy Shaw who was only 15 at the time. Ms. Shaw and her mother contacted police regarding “Cotton” stalking her, calling all hours of the day and night and requesting that Ms Shaw pose for nude photos for him, however, at the time in the State of Nevada, there were no laws regarding stalking on the books at this time. Shaw, just wanting “Cotton” to leave her alone, contacted Kell and requested that he “teach him a lesson.” - Ms. Shaw states that she only made the request for Kell to “ Rough him up.” Cotton Kelly, Troy Kell, Sandy Shaw and another young man named William “Billy” Merritt, drove out into the desert outside of Las Vegas and he shot Cotton Kelly 6x’s in the face. The Las Vegas media dubbed the homicide as “The Show and Tell Murder” Ms Shaw accompanied by another young teen named David Fletcher, returned to the body of Cotton Kelly and brought their friends to see also. It is unclear which friend reported the incident to police. Kell and Ms Shaw were all sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of Parole. Ms. Shaws sentence was communted and she was granted parole in December 2007. Merritt testified and only served 4 years out of a 12 year sentence. Kell was transfered as part of a prisoner exchange program to the Central Utah Correction Facility in Gunnison, Utah to serve out his life sentence. This transfer was done because of Kell’s gang affiliations and multiple altercations with inmates in Nevada. On July 6, 1994, Kell, was slipped a handcuff key by another inmate, produced a shank, and shanked a black inmate named Lonnie Blackmon, stabbing him 67 times. A fellow inmate named Eric Daniels assisted Kell by holding Blackmon’s legs. Lonnie Blackmon, was also part of the prisoner exchange program, being transferred to Utah from Arkansas. After a trial, Kell was sentenced to Death by Firing squad. Kell was transfered from the Central Utah Correctional Facility to the Utah State Prison in Draper, Utah where he resides to this day. In 2002 HBO released a documentary film entitled “Gladiator Days: Anatomy of a Prison Murder” the documentary includes the CCTV footage of Kell stabbing blackmon. I definitley recommend you view it.
