The temptation to write a fic about Troy and Shane being Neurodivergent Buddies who don’t realize they’re both autistic and that’s why they agree on so much is just so strong right now.
I'm very late to the troy posting but yeah Shane has every right to hate him for acting like a pos and contributing to the toxic environment that forced him to be miserable for so long.
The fact that in many ways Troy is a reflection of himself would only make it worse.
Shane knows that Troy understands exactly how he made him feel. Troy would understand that every time he flung hateful words across the ice at him, Shane agreed with every word. Troy would know that each and every one of those slurs had been added to Shane's inner mantra. Shane knows that Troy understood that. And that he did it all anyway.
And part of Shane also knows that that thing that drove Troy to say all that was inside him too. Yes, there is a difference between hurling those words at someone else and internally repeating to an audience of one. And yes, Shane would never have done to another player what Troy did to him. But he had seen his locker room in Montreal. He knew that his team had been holding these bigoted views whilst he had been their captain. The whole time. And he feels partly responsible for that. The bigoted hateful atmosphere that was brewing in that locker room under his leadership was the same one brewing inside of himself. Obviously it's not actually his fault that the metros are homophobic assholes but he would feel some responsibility for that. Like in a way he did inflict that vile homophobia on the league by allowing his team to mould themselves into that shape around him. And that happened for the exact same reason that Troy acted like that.
It's weird, it's actually hard to draw Troy because I see him such a specific way in my mind, but I'm very bad at drawing people in a way that they actually look like themselves, so I'm never satisfied with how I draw him. It never looks like him to me. But he also doesn't exist visually in the outerworld, so no one would *know* it doesn't look like him. But it never looks like him.
