It was one thing seeing her best friend over Skype, discussing men and food, but another seeing her standing before her, looking like a wet and disheveled rat that seemed to creep out of the gutter. The kaiju had been coming strong for years, as they had since Dee was merely a teenager. She lived on the Atlantic coast and since the monsters seemed to only sprout up in the Pacific, her home was relatively safe. When she was only twenty she was drafted as a jaeger pilot. Not that she had anything relatively remarkable about her, but young people all over the world were being drafted and trained and tested against other people for the position beside someone in a jaeger. Which were much like a force of nature. When Dee was twenty four she started her simulations after four rigorous years of physical training and when Dee was twenty five she was put in her first jaeger with her childhood best friend who had also been recruited. However, at the age of twenty nine, her friend was killed by a faulty oxygen supply in a routine maintenance of the machine. Dee was in the drift with him when he suffocated. Now, just two weeks before her thirtieth birthday (less than six months after the death of her copilot), Dee was being forced to test compatibility for a new copilot so that they wouldn't be short a jaeger on the field, and she wasn't even sure she was finished coping yet. At 0600 hours she was in the training room at the San Francisco base, barefoot and sparring stick in hand. Her superiors were giving her the option of picking from totally new recruits or seasoned pilots like herself that had lost their copilots. No jaeger was supposed to go unmanned in this war against monsters.
