I noticed a few recent pictures you posted are from Vancouver, and I can't help but be interested because it's in my neck of the woods. Are you up here for SHUX?

I’m in Vancouver for Fan Expo, which as it happens is in the same basic place as SHUX.

I've been eyeing the The Mechanisms with some curiosity. Though I'm not sure where to start with them. Any advice?

I only recently got into them and yes!

First off something to understand is this is a kayfabe thing going on, which makes the lore kind of confusing. The Mechanisms are irl humans from our world who had a fun band. But within the story of the albums, the Mechanisms are a crew of immortal cybernetic space pirates, initially created by Doc Carmilla to be her backup, then they split from her to do their own music, where they go to planets and then make albums about their experiences there. In the narration interludes between songs on albums they are often talking about their perspectives, what they were doing at the time, etc. Sometimes they’re very involved in the story, such as when Ashes O’Reilly just plain is Hades in UDaD, or Brian is Merlin in HNoC, but mostly they just sing roles of people they know were in these situations. Think of it as a bunch of immortals LARPing to stave off boredom, if that helps. 

1) I personally would recommend going through their albums in published order. Sound quality evolves with time. Note that their final album is a live recording of their final show, mostly the Bifrost Incident songs and some of their most favorites, and is their goodbye to the band as a whole so it’s got a farewell vibe. You can buy their albums on Bandcamp, or listen for free there, on spotify, or youtube. 

2) Check their website for the Fiction section, which are short little stories to accompany the albums. Save the Crew Fiction section for last/when you’re listening to the Tales to be Told albums. I recommend reading “Out” last. I also recommend taking the fiction slowly, it’s a lot of dark, heavy content. 

3) I haven’t started diving into this yet, but there are many recordings of live shows which have a different energy, as well as fun cast interactions. Though they are more myopic than a woodland mammal and thus would be largely decorative were it not for corrective lenses, my eyes are very pretty.

As I once announced to the internet at large, I can open doorknobs with my feet. My feet and legs are quite dextrous!

I went with physical good points because that's usually the way of this type of thing. Also, I have a love-hate (well, really more love-disappointment) relationship with my hair. Sometimes I love it and sometimes I just sigh dejectedly at it.
