‘BACK 4 BLOOD’ - REVIEW ROUNDUP!

We’ve been waiting a long time to finally be able to say it... ‘Back 4 Blood’ is OUT NOW!!!!!

As huge Left 4 Dead fans here at TGC, the countdown to launch has at times felt painful - but here we are. We made it.

The time for cleaning is upon us as we place ourselves in the centre of the war against the ‘Ridden’! But we know as always, there’ll be some of you waiting on review scores before you squad up and take down this ever-evolving threat.

Polygon - No Scoring System

“Left 4 Dead is a beautiful relic, something I and many others spent hundreds of hours playing in high school and college. But with games like Warhammer: Vermintide 2 and even Aliens: Fireteam Elite branching out and taking more of a class-based approach, I was sure Back 4 Blood’s more classic bone structure would crumble under the pressure. But Back 4 Blood is more like that makeshift, armor-clad Hummer you see in every zombie show and movie: The bones of what it once was are easy to see, but it’s been reinforced to survive in a new environment.”

“Back 4 Blood is the co-op survival shooter that we’ve been waiting for since Left 4 Dead took the world by storm. The introduction of Corruption Cards really helps the game stand out, while offering players varied gameplay that doesn’t feel stale at any point. The current issues surrounding solo play are certainly a turn-off, but not enough for me to not recommend playing it, especially if you have a group of friends ready to go. With a little TLC, Back 4 Blood has every ingredient necessary to flourish, and perhaps even dethrone its predecessors… maybe.”

“With the AI Director working to switch weapon and item drops, enemy placements, fortifications and mutations, and the incredible atmosphere always pulling its weight, Back 4 Blood is a triumphant return for Turtle Rock. Yes, some parts of the game are glitchy, and the almost tacked-on solo mode feels like an actual insult to players who maybe just want to experience this without other people. But ultimately Back 4 Blood is the most fun I’ve had with a shooter this year, and an absolute blast to play with friends.”

Crypt of the Necrodancer

Crypt of the Necrodancer is not for the faint of heart when it comes to completion - according to TrueAchievements, only one Xbox gamer has completed the feat, with a playtime in excess of 4000 hours. Luckily for the casuals, it’s a lot easier to get on the board and figure out how this RPG roguelite/dance game ticks, and if you’re a fan of rhythm titles, you’ll probably have a great time doing it.

Every action - attacks, movement, picking up items - needs to be timed to the beat of the game’s excellent soundtrack. It’s super satisfying when you get it right, but definitely takes some getting used to, and you’ll end up with a lot of runs that crash out when you’re starting up. Like many roguelites, there are a range of characters on offer, each of which changes the game in unique and interesting ways, as well as tonnes of unlockable items and weaponry to get to grips with.

It’s a fantastically deep game, and the rhythmic core of content on offer keeps pulsing along for hundreds and hundreds of hours. That much playtime out of such a low price tag is incredible value for money, and that’s not even taking into account the wealth of content updates available. If you blast through the base game, you can add extra items, bosses and a whole new character with the Amplified DLC. Even without it, considering the outstanding range of remixed songs available totally free, you’ll never get bored in the Crypt of the Necrodancer!

Pros:

• Astonishing replayability means you can literally spend thousands of hours here

• Amazing soundtrack never gets old

• Excellent aesthetics and visuals

Cons:

• Very high difficulty curve, especially for the 100%

• High level of randomness may be frustrating for some
