In the Forest
A long but smooth river ride south on a second-hand raft landed Miles near a forest. It was the most lush place he had seen yet, so he imagined it was definitely worth a stop. Aside from a couple burned trees it was basically fully intact, which stumped him. Everywhere else had been dry and harsh, there was no music to be had because his lips had been too chapped. He stepped onto the earthy riverside (his bugle case in hand) without a second thought. The breeze was the kindest sensation he had felt since he could last remember hearing his mama's words. But the sound of trickling water alerted his senses. The raft! It was gone, a lost cause and not worth chasing down. A shame though. It was by the most absurd luck that he had come by it anyway.
He shook his head and took a couple steps towards the lush environment, when suddenly he felt a sharp shiver down his spine. He wasn't alone anymore. Miles examined the area ahead and to the side of him, but there was no sign of life. He finally turned around to find a figure in all black staring across at him. Considering what he had been through, considering that he was miraculously one of the few who survived what was believed to be the apocalypse, it was a surprise that he didn't scream upon encountering such an individual. Of course, he was backing up slowly. Black was a very taboo color in the current times. Miles hadn't blinked upon seeing the individual but his eyes cried for relief so he allowed once, but it was his greatest mistake. He couldn't help but yelp. The individual was now on his side of the river.
