LTFRB approves taxi fare hike

MANILA, Philippines – Taxi patrons nationwide, except in Baguio City, would have to shell out extra money to enjoy comfortable trip to their destinations after the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Thursday gave cab drivers and operators the go-ahead to increase their flagdown rate by the middle of January.
LTFRB public information officer Sonia del Mundo said the three-man LTFRB has granted the joint petition of the Philippine National Taxi Operators Association and R&E Taxi to adjust flagdown rates from P30 to P40 and from P2.50 to P3 per succeeding kilometer.
She said the LTFRB decision was dated December 23, 2010 but was officially docketed for release and publication last December 28.
Del Mundo, however, clarified that only taxi units with meter-issuing receipts are allowed to charge the new rates, adding that the LTFRB still has to check, calibrate and re-seal taxi meters before it can charge the new fare rate.
"Taxi passengers can refuse to pay the new rates if the cab they rode do not issue receipts. This is because only those meters that are calibrated and re-sealed by the LTFRB are certainly free from dubious configurations that overcharge," she said.
