Littlefield was a congressman from Maine who was planning to introduce a powerful antitrust bill into Congress.

Both parties were running against the trusts, the Democrats having ratified that position the day before.

Breaking the Bank at Monte Carlo
January 18th, 1901
President Charles Schwab of the Steel Trust--half octopus, half man--takes all of tiger Monte Carlo's money.
The caption reads “The Tiger - 'Its tough on a poor chap when he has to go up against the octopus.”
The already wealthy Schwab had visited the Monte Carlo casino and had bet big, winning a great deal of money.

A Remedy For Trusts
December 4th, 1901
President Roosevelt shines the light of Publicity onto the Trusts octopus and Trade, embracing on the couch.
Roosevelt had addressed Congress the day before, asking that they work to curb the power of the trusts, and stating that Publicity is the only sure remedy which we can now evoke. He wanted to force the trusts to report on their dealings and finances.

There was a discussion in Washington at the time on the issue of whether or not tariffs should be lowered, which would harm the trusts and increase trade.
