Hey guys,
being kind costs 0 dollars
White girls will never know how infuriating it is to read things like pale skin and blushing. It really makes me wanna give up reading fanfiction.
faux self-love movies are revolting. “You're trying to be someone you aren't!” Yeah, sweetie. its called ‘change’. you know, how real human adults hone their personalities to the best version of themselves?
Freedom in creative process?
Artistic freedom is paramount. If an artist writes, or creates any other kind of art, with a shocking topic it doesn't necessarily mean it supports the taboo things that have been described/depicted.
When it comes to literature specifically: Written word, literature by definition, is a tool to paint the reality of human condition. It uses different styles and different takes on a topic but it is always there to seek some sort of truth, personal or general. And fucked up shit, as fucked up as it is, happens every day in real life. You can pretend that it doesn't, good for you then, but some of us know it does, behind smiles and kind words and “good intentions” there can be a darkness lurking. So, if someone writes about it, doesn't mean it is being condoned, it simply means it happens- the art is there to raise awareness, if you will.
Some of the best classics of world’s literature deal with fucked up shit, yet they hold artistic value and an educational value too. As an individual one can chose to ignore that fact, or deem something too unpleasant, triggering, depressing, sickening even to their own personal taste, and that person has a full right to a choice of not reading the content in question.
However, you do not, by any means have the right to attack the authors and readers of a certain story. Criticism is always welcome, naturally, but there’s a pretty tick and visible line between criticism and a full blown, open attack. (Criticism is usually supported by sensible arguments and it does not contain subjective insults.) Every work of fiction holds a certain psychological background which can represent a level of fascination for some readers, while others can deem it as rubbish. That, in a normal, civilized society, should be okay. People are different, their experiences are different, their lives are different and no one has the right to be the judge, jury and the executioner in this scenario. Authors have the freedom of speech in creating content, readers have the freedom of choice when deciding what to read or not.
Dealing in uncalled for insults are an indication that you’re an insecure, and generally mean person. Why do you need that in your life?
