I still think about the fact I wrote an entire season of Roleslaying in 72 hours on no sleep for free, because it wasn’t supposed to fall to me, but I stepped up when nothing was done. Finally got a fraction of fair compensation years later after repeatedly asking for it after I found out another freelance writer was getting paid more than fair for a bare bones outline of a first episode of a finale.

But I did all that work in the span of 3 days. Along with filming, directing, and playing a character on set for 8-10 hours a day over the span of a week while someone else on set went clubbing in still peak Covid times, breaking our production manager’s rules for the film shoot, and endangering all of us. I have asthma, which was known, so not only was I working myself into getting sick - I was being exposed to a deadly virus knowingly.

I did, in fact, get very sick after production and was sick for 3 weeks.

It’s been 4-5 years for any new canon sasi content not centered around an ad or sponsorship btw. All compensated time to write btw. Even a sabbatical spent in New York for a month meant for just writing. Btw.

let’s go into detail about what’s going on with thomas sanders and brei grace, because i refuse to let him and the community sweep this under the rug:

thomas severely underpaid brei grace for her work on roleslaying with roman

thomas then laid brei off after creating a work environment that was bad enough to make her not want to return

thomas made a post “announcing” that rswr would be on “an indefinite hiatus”. but it was only available on his patreon (im not a patron so i can’t link the post or show a screenshot, but if i find a screenshot i will edit it into this post)

to amend the above point: i had seen many people saying there was a patreon post that touched on the subject of brei being laid off and rswr taking a hiatus, but in actuality, according to a patron, thomas mentioned the matter in a patreon livestream, not a full blown post. i apologize for the misinformation

just days later, thomas makes a tweet about his merch sale, and most (if not ALL) his current merch was designed by brei, who will not see a penny in royalties, and this is apparently a regular thing with thomas

finally, an entire week after the patreon “announcement” and brei being laid off, thomas says this on the youtube community page (among other things, but this is what im focusing on):

i want to point out the phrase “brei is currently not part of our team” and how thomas fails to acknowledge that HE is responsible for that. HE laid her off. and like a cowardly snake, he’s hiding behind vague corporate speak because he doesn’t want to admit the truth

unfortunately for him, the truth is out there

i know i sound really serious and dramatic and yall are probably not even taking me seriously and you have your pitchforks at the ready, but guess what? i couldn’t care less. i mean this IS serious, which is why im taking it seriously. but at the end of the day im just informing the community of what i know. what you do with that information is up to you

im not “cancelling” thomas, or trying to start a witch hunt, im just so sick of everyone pretending thomas is a perfect harmless little angel who can do no wrong. cos guess what? he HAS done wrong. he’s done wrong by brei. but everyone is so busy sucking up to him that they don’t seem to care that brei is suffering because of him

and this isn’t the first time he’s done wrong by an artist, either (let’s never forget the mad libs incident)

to summarize: thomas doesn’t make it a habit of properly compensating the artists he hires, he makes their experiences a living hell, and then he lies through his teeth about it

like i said, do with this information what you will, but i don’t know how thomas sleeps at night

I feel like a lot of the Thomas defenders that I see online seem to get stuck at the starting point of criticism— the “there’s no finale coming, or even new SaSi content” criticism.

Which! It’s valid criticism! But defenders go “well, Thomas is human! You can’t expect him to be a content mill!”

Again! Fair rebuttal! However, the Finale Is Never Coming criticism is a symptom of the larger problem at hand. And the problem that I personally have with Thomas is that he has no regard in setting a clear path of communication nor boundaries.

There’s no communication with his fans or his patreon. And no. Insta stories that say “Editing! 🫶” And selfies with the caption “Filming 😻” are not communication, that’s stalling.

There’s no communication with the people he hires. Why are animations getting paid cents or not at all for their work. Why are employees learning their jobs are over via tweets and YouTube community posts. He doesn’t care about the staff he has, or about the freelance he employs and it’s shown through how he treats them, how they now have to dance around how they talk about their experiences online because they’re afraid of legal repercussions.

Thomas has cultivated a deeply parasocial bond with his fan base, one that he is exploiting for money, attention and defense, because you can’t even comment under his posts politely asking for a more in depth update without getting a victimized response from him or a fan rabidly clawing into their screen to protect their favorite Internet personality.

And that’s why the criticism is so harsh. Because having a fan base like this and treating your business like this is dangerous and toxic.

Man I feel so bad for old fans still hanging on and new fans who haven’t actually gotten to experience an episode drop and the fandom boom after.

I have to wonder if new fans really even care that much about the lore and the finale and the fucking orange side or the dark sides acceptance. Do they just care about the fucking ads and the incorrect quotes? Do they know that sanders sides used to be a real fandom and wasn’t always the shell it is now?

You can’t keep trying to cover up the fact that the finale isn’t coming any time soon. You need to address where it is in production, and any possible issues that have delayed its production or release.

A fandom can’t be sustained on filler content alone.
