Dear Annie who sent the ask about thomastair,
First of all, I will not be posting the ask directly. Sorry about that. I felt that it might be hurtful for those who you referred to as “thomastair hoes” (which includes me too!!)
But - since you took your time to share your thoughts (never got 9 asks from the same person explaining their stance) and wished to share your opinion, I respect it and there decided to reply on a separate post.
I understand your feelings about Alastair. I don’t condone it, but I do get that you are entitled to your feelings. You had made many points about why he shouldn't be dating Thomas, but I do disagree with them, I’m not going to do it right here. Not today.
I’m not going to defend Alastair - or his relationship with Thomas. I feel that many people in the fandom have already done that - and quite well too.
All I can say in response to your Ted Talk as you called it, is just one thing.
Your main concern (throughout the asks) was the fact that you didn’t understand why people shipped Thomastair considering their history. Once again, I wish I could write all my feelings about this but it’s been a long day and I'm frankly a little tired.
However, I did want to talk to you about you not understanding why some people of the fandom like thomastair.
Here is the thing - the Shadowhunter Chronicles is SO huge that we have so many different ships - and more coming as well! Not everyone is going to understand (or like and support and pray for) every single ships.
That’s just how it works.
And every person who doesn’t like a particular tsc ship has their own reason for it.
There are those who don’t like Heronstairs because they feel it’s not canon. Those who don’t like malec because they feel Magnus is older and it’s weird. Those who don’t like Clace because they used to think they were siblings. Those who don’t like Jemma because it disrespected the parabatai bond. And of course those who don’t like thomastair because they find it ‘toxic’ as you do.
I just want you to know that you are allowed to find the ship toxic or disrespectful or wrong. That is completely valid. Just as the feelings of those who do not like any of the above ships - and others - are valid too.
Your perception of this ship very much depends on your values and beliefs - and no one can tell you that you shouldn’t feel that way.
Just as others - or even you - cannot tell me (or other thomastair fans) that we shouldn't like Thomas and Alastair getting together. People might like them together for so many different reasons. I don’t think it’s just one thing. I could make a list, but again, not today.
But regardless, this is my point.
It’s okay if you don’t like Thomstair.
It’s okay if you don’t understand why others do.
You don’t have to understand their perspective - you just need to respect it.
