“Why didn't you tell me?” Max sighed. “I know I can’t tell you a lot of things about the boys, but…you could’ve told me. I thought we were trying to fix our, you know, brotherly bond or whatever.”
“We are,” Rafael said immediately. “Max, it’s so important to me that we go back to how things used to be.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me about this?” Max demanded, sounding annoyed now. “Because it feels like you don’t trust me—”
“Then why didn’t you tell—”
“Because I am fucking embarassed, okay?” Rafael shouted, throwing his hands up. “I didn’t tell you because it’s fucking embarassing.”
Max blinked at that. “Rafe.”
“I have failed as a father,” Rafael said, almost to himself. “My daughter doesn’t talk to me anymore. And my son is an extremist now.”
Max was quiet for a moment, then he reached out and squeezed Rafael’s arm. “Cami is the coolest girl I know.”
Rafael lifted an eyebrow. “More than Lance and Arthur?”
“I said coolest girl,” Max noted with a grin. “Although she’s very close to dethroning them. Did you know she can ride her bike hands-free?”
Rafael, who had taught her how to do that, couldn’t help but smile. Then he shook his head. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about Arjun sooner.”
Max squeezed his arm again. “He is not an extremist, Rafael. He’s just a little bitch.”
Rafael snorted at that. “Is that better or worse?”
“It’s fixable,” Max replied. “Do you want me to fix it?”
