The Summer I Turned Pretty - Season One Behind the Scenes
Conrad Fisher in Season One of The Summer I Turned Pretty
Celebratory Isabelle Conklin x fisher!fem aligned reader! headcanons because it was my birthday yesterday (Oct. 4) and I'm wlw
She literally forces you out of the house to go on a "date" but she's stepping away every few minutes to call to set up a birthday party for you.
Not many people, just the usual, Conrad, Jeremiah, Laurel, Steven, Taylor ofc, and maybe Adam if you're close with him after.. Yknow.
Birthday smooches
Like she MAKES a mistletoe but birthday themed instead of Christmas.
Hangs them everywhere and tells everyone attending they only apply to you and her.
WOMAN LIKER.
I think she's bi but bear with me ok
She buys you matching bracelets, and outfits, and she not so nonchalantly also secretly buys a ring for you but she's saving that for your next birthday.
Having to be secretive when her love language is acts of service and gift giving kills her deadass
But she makes up for it by kissing you every time you ask why she's dragging you everywhere but the beach house
She likes holding your hand, tracing her fingers over your palm, kissing your knuckles.
She has a Polaroid of you and her kissing in her wallet btw
Would probably get a set her name in your phone to "future wife" or something romantically
You guys share a family sized pack of sour patch kids
WOULD marry you with paper rings.
Her favorite moments with you are when you're both drunk, giggly and just.. there, existing.
Laurel loves you btw,, that woman is also bi
She's big on communication! Misunderstandings aren't worth losing you
She def shares her location with you
You braid her hair after she showers n she kisses your thighs
Shoulder biter.
Not even to leave a mark tbh she just likes biting you
Every time you make a self deprecating comment she's literally just like 🤷♀️ "well, I'm still in love with you, so.. remind me why I care?"
HEAVY on the "I love you, I will never NOT love you." Because miss girl falls hard.
Even when you just brush past her she's like kissing your shoulder or grabbing your hand and following you wherever you're going
Clingy book gf
Definitely doodles your name in hearts on the margins of her diary like a teenager in love
She's definitely a cuddler
Into you because you're you. Not because shes expected to be
Chatty!! She doesn't like sitting in silence she feels like too much happens in between words
Attentive lover,,, her eyes are always on you even in a crowded room.
DEFINITELY puts lipstick on just to kiss your cheek and leave a mark
She draws on you when she's bored
Little hearts usually, maybe your name next to hers, stars, infinity signs.
Undiagnosed ADHD
Giggly and loud when she's with you because you feel like home
In conclusion I'm lesbian and women r pretty
Why Bonrad Falls Flat as a YA Romance: Part 2
As a continuation of my previous post, I will be pinpointing and analyzing Belly & Conrad's relationship dynamics based on the season finale of season 1 of The Summer I Turned Pretty. I couldn't end a discussion of season 1 without ending it with one of the biggest flaws in Belly and Conrad's relationship:
Conrad is a habitual gaslighter:
I know this sounds extreme, but I'll explain. In episode 7, Belly agrees to go to the Debutant Ball with Jeremiah, and the majority of the episode consists of preparation for this event.
Jeremiah promises Belly that he'll be there for her. However, towards the end of the episode, Belly is confused and nervous since Jeremiah didn't show up for their dance number. As a result, Conrad stepped in since nobody knew Jeremiah's whereabouts.
Without full context, it would seem that Jeremiah didn't keep his promise and nearly humiliated Belly by leaving her stranded during an important event, but there's one problem with this sentiment. Conrad's actions are what directly caused this.
In episode 6, Jeremiah decided to go to a party with Conrad and Steven, and then he started having a conversation with Conrad asking about their mother, Susanna. Here's how their conversation went:
Jeremiah: So, hey, um. Have you noticed anything weird about mom lately?
Conrad: What? What are you talking about?
Jeremiah: Oh, she's just been sleeping more.
Conrad: Yeah, it's the summertime, Jere. Mom sleeps more when she's on vacation.
Jeremiah: Okay, alright fuck you.
Jeremiah: And congrats on your win today. I know how much you don't like to lose.
Conrad: It's not about winning for me. It's about doing things the right way.
Jeremiah: Okay, sure.
Despite the short interaction, I picked up on quite a few things here. Conrad has not only lied to Jeremiah but also gaslit him. Deflecting someone's concerns that you're fully aware of or know more about while intentionally making the other person second guess themselves is a form of gaslighting.
Conrad isn't unfamiliar with this behavior as he attempted to do the same thing to Belly when she brought up the moment when they almost kissed on the 4th of July.
There's also some irony in Conrad's last statement. He claims that he cares about doing things the right way, but what exactly is right about lying to your brother about your mother's illness.
To add even more context, this isn't the first time Susanna had cancer. Therefore, the possibility of Susanna being sick is nothing Jeremiah hasn't already experienced.
Conrad has a hero complex:
Not only has the show itself confirmed this in the third season, but it's been pretty evident since season 1.
In the season finale, when Conrad is dancing with Belly during the debutant waltz, he tells Belly, "I'm glad it was me." Now, do I believe that Conrad intentionally sabotaged Jeremiah? No, I don't, because nobody expected Jeremiah to leave unannounced.
However, Conrad used this as an opportunity. I would also like to note that a person can have more than one motive. Yes, Conrad danced with Belly since she needed a partner, and he also danced with Belly because he wanted to be in Jeremiah's place.
This is proven by the fact that he realized it was too late to be Belly's date once she agreed to go with Jeremiah. He tried to ask her earlier in episode 6, and Belly hesitantly responded with an "I'll think about it." In the same episode, he also decided to conveniently text Belly about the ball after Steven told him about the possibility of Belly dating Jeremiah.
The problem with Conrad's hero complex is that the narrative only writes him as a hero, at other's expense that were caused by his own actions.
A good differentiation between a hero, and someone with a hero complex is that a hero does heroic acts due to morality and principle whereas someone with a hero complex is usually driven by validation, personal desires, or has a self-serving mindset.
In many instances, Conrad's heroism is driven by validation (friends & family) and personal desires (Belly). He feels the need to be a hero because he needs the validation of knowing he's capable of fixing things.
Not only is having a hero complex inherently unhealthy, but it also causes more issues, intentional or not. You can't be a hero while simultaneously being a detriment.
To conclude my overall thoughts, I'm going to bullet point the main issues from all episodes of season 1:
Belly puts Conrad on a high pedestal.
Conrad ruins or dampens important dates for Belly.
Conrad ignores Belly.
Conrad Two Timed Nicole.
Conrad only puts in efforts when he feels like he's losing Belly.
Conrad has gaslit Belly and those close to him.
Conrad has a hero complex at other characters' detriment.
Since I'm done analyzing season 1 of Belly and Conrad's dynamic, I'm going to start looking at season 2 to continue this series.
So...
It's a nice romanticization of a guy who never says I love you to you and doesn't show it either but expects you to know it anyway, who doesn't communicate in general, who is constantly emotionally unavailable and immature, who apologizes for making the same mistakes again and again, who tries to gaslight you, who plays hot and cold with you, who plays on your insecurities when you have a justifiable point against him, often infantilizes you by telling you to grow up, but who ironically doesn't recognize you when you evolve, for whom you must always be the emotional support but very little the other way around, always giving and then taking away...
But yes, if you prefer this type of relationship and for you that is real and genuine rather than the guy who...
I don't know...
Tells you he loves you and more precisely shows it to you often (because actions are more important than words), who always communicates with you, is emotionally available and mature, doesn't play hot and cold with you, doesn't play on your insecurities during an argument, reassures you when you are insecure, does not treat you like children telling you to grow up, who supports your developments and changes, who is emotionally supportive, who able to usually read your mind because he knows you so well (and vice versa), who frankly makes very few mistakes with you and above all makes sure not to repeat those already made, etc.
No seriously, I hate the romanticization of Conrad Fisher as a romantic partner for Belly and for anyone in fact.
(I talk about the show precisely here, but Conrad is also horrible in the books)
