Part 1/6: Electro

Max Dillon remembers the snakes.

He's seen a lot of coldblooded creatures back in Dr.Connors’ lab, back when he wasn't Electro— just Max Dillion, an ordinary college kid with a job and a life that didn't include frying everything he touched. There was this red one, its coils thick and glossy, lazily coiled around a branch like it meant to keep it there forever. Max saw what it did to a mouse once. It took its sweet time, slithered its coils around the mouse and squeezed it as the little thing struggled and squeaked. When it finally went limp, the snake’s jaw unhinged, opening to a maw red with desire. And then it was all over for the mouse.

Electro could imagine it now. The freak— the big man’s freak, Tombstone’s knife in the dark, the Gravedigger— was transformed in Electro’s mind. His upper body would still be human with the same old gaunt look in his eye, the eye that belonged to the waterlogged corpse underneath all those red threads. His lower half would be stacked, coils on coils, humming with power. He’d trap Electro like a mouse, moving with a predator’s certainty, a predator’s patience, just like he did to anyone who’d dare stand in the way of Tombstone's empire. He’d coil around Electro, hand sliding across his chest, caressing his chin, muttering sweet nothings, sickly things, overripe fruit and rotting meat, until Electro blacked out and gave the Gravedigger everything he wanted.

Electro didn’t believe in god anymore, not since the accident in the Conners' lab- the drill, the panel, the electric eel tank- rewired his entire existence into Electro. but there was something unmistakably biblical about what the Gravedigger was. For the first time, Electro wondered what it was like to be tempted by the Serpent.

Nothing about the Gravedigger was biblical, or even Abrahamic, but then again, neither of them knew anything about China, at least not more than what the average American (white, male, ‘normal’) knew. The creation goddess Nüwa had a snake body and a human head, and went through ten thousand transformations each day. Her other half, Fuxi was mostly the same. Legends said that the two were once one being split into two. That was why they were constantly trying to reunite.

Grace Liu was never split from Gravedigger. Gravedigger was grafted onto her. Gravedigger was ephemeral, the shapeless. Grace gave him form. Gravedigger is monstrous on his own but in comparison to grace? Grace was a monster long before the Gravedigger. Gravedigger had no human half— just snake.
